R. (cf. 9) The Lord comes to rule the earth with justice.

Sing praise to the LORD with the harp,
with the harp and melodious song.
With trumpets and the sound of the horn
sing joyfully before the King, the LORD.

Let the sea and what fills it resound,
the world and those who dwell in it;
let the rivers clap their hands,
the mountains shout with them for joy.

Before the LORD, for he comes,
for he comes to rule the earth,
He will rule the world with justice
and the peoples with equity.

THEOLOGY NOTE OF THE WEEK

- Homoiousios

Homoiousios means "of similar substance," "of the similar essence."
It was a term used in the fourth century by a heretical group to
describe the relationship between the Father and the Son. This is
an improper term to use when describing the relationship between
the Father and the Son. They are not of similar essence. Rather,
they are of the same essence (Homoousios). In other words,
according to the correct doctrine of the Trinity, the Father and
the Son (and the Holy Spirit) share the same essence.

SAINT OF THE WEEK

- Elizabeth of Hungary (1207-1231): November 17

In her short life Elizabeth manifested such great love for the poor
and suffering that she has become the patroness of Catholic
charities and of the Secular Franciscan Order. The daughter of the
King of Hungary, Elizabeth chose a life of penance and asceticism
when a life of leisure and luxury could easily have been hers. This
choice endeared her in the hearts of the common people throughout
Europe.

At the age of 14 Elizabeth was married to Louis of Thuringia (a
German principality), whom she deeply loved; she bore three
children. Under the spiritual direction of a Franciscan friar, she
led a life of prayer, sacrifice and service to the poor and sick.
Seeking to become one with the poor, she wore simple clothing.
Daily she would take bread to hundreds of the poorest in the land,
who came to her gate.

After six years of marriage, her husband died in the Crusades, and
she was grief-stricken. Her husband's family looked upon her as
squandering the royal purse, and mistreated her, finally throwing
her out of the palace. The return of her husband's allies from the
Crusades resulted in her being reinstated, since her son was legal
heir to the throne.

In 1228 Elizabeth joined the Secular Franciscan Order, spending the
remaining few years of her life caring for the poor in a hospital
which she founded in honor of St. Francis. Elizabeth's health
declined, and she died before her 24th birthday in 1231. Her great
popularity resulted in her canonization four years later.

BOOK OF THE WEEK

"Oscar Romero and the Communion of Saints: A Biography,"by Scott
Wright. Orbis Books, 2009.
-
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/1570758395/ref=noism/christianspiritu/

This is the story of a modern prophet and martyr, the great
Archbishop Oscar Romero, who was gunned down while celebrating Mass
in San Salvador. Even though his death was thirty years ago, his
memory still remains clear and vibrant. Who could forget the
saintly man who said he forgave his murderers as he lay dying?

Scott Wright gives his readers a loving and detailed biography of
the prophet who made holiness seem accessible to everyone. The
author hopes that readers will have their lives changed by this
book which is filled with photos by the Franciscan Octavio Duran.

Oscar started life as a humble lad, son of poor parents, born on
August 15, 1917 just ten miles from the Honduran border. He was the
second child in a family of eight. After seminary and ordination,
Father Oscar became a relatively conservative priest, bishop, and
archbishop. He saw the poverty and hardships wreaked by a corrupt
government on his fellow countrymen but made no great efforts to
alleviate or address the evil. He did not want to rock the
boat...until he had to deal with the murder of his close priest
friend, Father Rutillio Grande and the deaths of many other priests
and people with whom he had worked.

He experienced an astonishing transformation in the last three
years of his life, a transformation that today appears like it will
lead to his being canonized. Archbishop Romero became an advocate
of the voiceless, and embarked on a path that led to his death.

In this book one sees the human Oscar and the stunning picture of
the Gospel the Archbishop made real.

JOKE OF THE WEEK

- Deadly Prophecy

A medieval astrologer prophesied to a king that his favorite
mistress would soon die.

Sure enough, the woman died a short time later. The king was
outraged at the astrologer, certain that his prophecy had brought
about the woman's death. He summoned the astrologer and gave him
this command: "Prophet, tell me when you will die!"

The astrologer realized that the king was planning to kill him,
immediately, no matter what answer he gave. So he said, finally, "I
do not know when I will die. I only know that whenever I die, you
will die three days later."
