SPIRITUAL GROWTH RESOURCE OF THE MONTH
"Cricital Issues in Christian Contemplative Practice" paperback
book, PDF download, or ePub e-book.
- by James Arraj and Philip St. Romain
The stories, discussions and short essays you will encounter in
this book can at first glance appear bewildering. What does talk
about everything from the psychological unconscious to strange
energy movements in the body that the Hindus called kundalini have
to do with the Christian life of prayer and contemplation? But the
wide-ranging debates found here are the result of the Christian
mystical tradition trying to wake up and throw off the torpor of a
sleep that has lasted more than 300 years. And the most amazing
thing about these discussions is that they are taking place in a
new context which is not a theoretical theological analysis of the
spiritual life, but among people who are concerned with how one
would go about living the contemplative life day by day, and who
are actually trying to do it. In short, we face the first sustained
practical interest in contemplation since the end of the 17th
century, but already this enthusiasm has raised critical questions
that need to be addressed lest these new beginnings go astray.
Part I introduces us to three modern attempts to renew the
Christian life of prayer.
Part II allows us to meet people today who have had Christian
experiences of prayer and contemplation.
Part III explores how the renewal of the Christian contemplative
life is interacting with Eastern forms of meditation.

WEEKEND READINGS
http://www.nccbuscc.org/nab/
Saturday: Eph 4:7-16; Ps 122:1-2, 3-4ab, 4cd-5; Lk 13:1-9
Sunday: Sir 35:12-14, 16-18; Ps 34:2-3, 17-18, 19, 23; 2 Tm
4:6-8, 16-18; Lk 18:9-14
R. (7a) The Lord hears the cry of the poor.
I will bless the LORD at all times;
his praise shall be ever in my mouth.
Let my soul glory in the LORD;
the lowly will hear me and be glad.
The LORD confronts the evildoers,
to destroy remembrance of them from the earth.
When the just cry out, the Lord hears them,
and from all their distress he rescues them.
The LORD is close to the brokenhearted;
and those who are crushed in spirit he saves.
The LORD redeems the lives of his servants;
no one incurs guilt who takes refuge in him.

THEOLOGY NOTE OF THE WEEK
- Holy, Holiness
A quality of perfection, sinlessness, and inability to sin that is
possessed by God alone. As Christians we are called to be holy (1
Pet. 1:16). But this does not refer to our nature. Instead, it is a
command of our practice and thought. We are to be holy in obedience
(1 Pet. 1:15). God has made us holy through His Son Jesus (Eph.
1:4; 1 Pet. 2:9).

SAINT OF THE WEEK
- St. Antônio de Sant'Anna Galvão
God's plan in a person's life often takes unexpected turns which
become life-giving through cooperation with God's grace.
Born in Guarantingueta near São Paulo (Brazil), Antônio attended
the Jesuit seminary in Belem but later decided to become a
Franciscan friar. Invested in 1760, he made final profession the
following year and was ordained in 1762.
In São Paulo, he served as preacher, confessor and porter. Within a
few years he was appointed confessor to the Recollects of St.
Teresa, a group of nuns in that city. He and Sister Helena Maria of
the Holy Spirit founded a new community of sisters under the
patronage of Our Lady of the Conception of Divine Providence.
Sister Helena Maria's premature death the next year left Father
Antônio responsible for the new congregation, especially for
building a convent and church adequate for their growing numbers.
He served as novice master for the friars in Macacu and as guardian
of St. Francis Friary in São Paulo. He founded St. Clare Friary in
Sorocaba. With the permission of his provincial and the bishop, he
spent his last days at the "Recolhimento de Nossa Senhora da Luz,"
the convent of the sisters' congregation he had helped establish.
He was beatified in Rome on October 25, 1998, and canonized in 2007.

BOOK OF THE WEEK
"Miracles of the Saints: True Stories of Lives Touched by the
Supernatural," by Bert Ghezzi. Zondervan Publishing House, 1996.
-
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0310207002/ref=noism/christianspiritu/
Ghezzi calls this a book of true stories of lives touched by the
supernatural. He makes this a perfect introduction to twenty four
new friends who are colorful men and women. He sees these persons
as human followers after God. "I feel right at home when the saints
let me see their humanity." Ghezzi gives us brothers and sisters
who paid their way with blood.
Divided into five sections, this book begins with "Miracles of
love". Here one finds Martin de Porres, St. Theresa Margaret, Saint
Perpetua, and Solanus Casey. In "Mystics and Miracles," one reads
about St. Catherine of Siena, Lutgarde, Anthony of Egypt, Elizabeth
of Hungary and Clare of Assisi. Next are the "Miracles of
Converson," including St. Dominic, Sabas and Apphian, Anthony of
Padua, and Vincent Ferrer.
In "Miracles to Awaken Us," we read of Francis of Assisi, Teresa of
Avila, Francis of Paola, and John Bosco. In the last section called
"Miracles that Changed the Course of History," there are Joan of
Arc, Patrick, Clotilda, Vedast, Remi, and Francis Xavier.
Lives that are exhilarating, tender, fiery, plain, and exasperating
are included in this small volume. All without exception have
experienced God's touch in their lives over the last two thousand
years. All of these holy persons are men and women who can offer
the evidence for which readers are searching .
