SPIRITUAL GROWTH RESOURCE OF THE MONTH

"Cricital Issues in Christian Contemplative Practice" paperback
book, PDF download, or ePub e-book.
- by James Arraj and Philip St. Romain

The stories, discussions and short essays you will encounter in
this book can at first glance appear bewildering. What does talk
about everything from the psychological unconscious to strange
energy movements in the body that the Hindus called kundalini have
to do with the Christian life of prayer and contemplation? But the
wide-ranging debates found here are the result of the Christian
mystical tradition trying to wake up and throw off the torpor of a
sleep that has lasted more than 300 years. And the most amazing
thing about these discussions is that they are taking place in a
new context which is not a theoretical theological analysis of the
spiritual life, but among people who are concerned with how one
would go about living the contemplative life day by day, and who
are actually trying to do it. In short, we face the first sustained
practical interest in contemplation since the end of the 17th
century, but already this enthusiasm has raised critical questions
that need to be addressed lest these new beginnings go astray.

Part I introduces us to three modern attempts to renew the
Christian life of prayer.

Part II allows us to meet people today who have had Christian
experiences of prayer and contemplation.

Part III explores how the renewal of the Christian contemplative
life is interacting with Eastern forms of meditation.

R. (cf. 2) Our help is from the Lord, who made heaven and earth.

I lift up my eyes toward the mountains;
whence shall help come to me?
My help is from the LORD,
who made heaven and earth.

May he not suffer your foot to slip;
may he slumber not who guards you:
indeed he neither slumbers nor sleeps,
the guardian of Israel.

The LORD is your guardian; the LORD is your shade;
he is beside you at your right hand.
The sun shall not harm you by day,
nor the moon by night.

The LORD will guard you from all evil;
he will guard your life.
The LORD will guard your coming and your going,
both now and forever.

SAINT OF THE WEEK

- Isaac Jogues, John de Brebeuf and companions: October 19th

Isaac Jogues and his companions were the first martyrs of the North
American continent officially recognized by the Church. As a young
Jesuit, Isaac Jogues, a man of learning and culture, taught
literature in France. He gave up that career to work among the
Huron Indians in the New World, and in 1636 he and his companions,
under the leadership of John de Brébeuf, arrived in Quebec. The
Hurons were constantly warred upon by the Iroquois, and in a few
years Father Jogues was captured by the Iroquois and imprisoned for
13 months. His letters and journals tell how he and his companions
were led from village to village, how they were beaten, tortured
and forced to watch as their Huron converts were mangled and killed.
An unexpected chance for escape came to Isaac Jogues through the
Dutch, and he returned to France, bearing the marks of his
sufferings. Several fingers had been cut, chewed or burnt off. Pope
Urban VIII gave him permission to offer Mass with his mutilated
hands: "It would be shameful that a martyr of Christ be not allowed
to drink the Blood of Christ." Welcomed home as a hero, Father
Jogues might have sat back, thanked God for his safe return and
died peacefully in his homeland. But his zeal led him back once
more to the fulfillment of his dreams. In a few months he sailed
for his missions among the Hurons.

In 1646 he and Jean de Lalande, who had offered his services to the
missioners, set out for Iroquois country in the belief that a
recently signed peace treaty would be observed. They were captured
by a Mohawk war party, and on October 18 Father Jogues was
tomahawked and beheaded. Jean de Lalande was killed the next day at
Ossernenon, a village near Albany, New York.

BOOK OF THE WEEK

"When God Weeps: Why Our Sufferings Matter to the Almighty," by
Joni Eareckson Tada and Steven Estes. Zondervan Publishing House,
1997.
-
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0310238358/ref=noism/christianspiritu/

Written by a woman who has been in a wheelchair for more than the
past thirty years and her closest friend and pastor, Steven Estes,
this book addresses the topic of suffering in an enlightening and
interesting way. They show that when events in life go well, it is
easy to trust God, but when seemingly senseless suffering comes
one's way, trust seems to disappear. These authors don't want that
trust to evaporate, but hope it can even grow stronger. God is
still at the helm and wants humankind to know that the suffering
are not sent by God nor does God abandon the soul that is suffering.

After the introduction which is called "I'm Hurting Bad," the
authors divide the rest of the book into four sections : Who is
this God? What is He up to? How can I hang in there? and concludes
with appendices. There is a special section called "Before you put
this book down" where the readers are encouraged to know that God
is in charge, a God who has given the promise that He will always
be nearby. "His decrees and ordinances shape good and evil for life
in such a way as to warn us of hell, woo us toward heaven, and fit
us for life here and in the hereafter."

Readers are asked what they want to do about God's promise. "Is
your heart warmed toward Him? Is your anger moving God-ward?" The
authors insist that this book is about decisions, even when God
backs one up against the wall and seems to force one to make tough
decisions and good choices. "I am the answer to your deepest
longings", is the love song that permeates this book.

A great idea, and timely.

JOKE OF THE WEEK

- Too much information

A little boy returning home from his first day at school said to
his mother, "Mom, what's sex?"

His mother, who believed in all the most modern educational
theories, gave him a detailed explanation, covering all aspects of
the tricky subject.

When she had finished, the little lad produced an enrollment form
which he had brought home from school and said, "Yes, but how am I
going to get all that into this one little square?"

- - -

- Cured

A woman went to doctor's office for her annual examination.

Suddenly, another older doctor noticed her burst out of the
examination room, screaming as she ran down the hall. He stopped
the hysterical woman and asked her to sit down and relax. Then, he
asked her what she was so upset about.

A few minutes later, the older doctor marched back to the woman's
doctor and demanded, "What's the matter with you? Mrs. Terry is 63
years old, she has four grown children, and seven grandchildren...
and you told her she was pregnant?"

The woman's doctor smiled smugly as he continued to write on his
clipboard, "Cured her hiccups though, didn't I?"
