THEOLOGY NOTE OF THE WEEK
- Hell
Hell is the future place of eternal punishment of the damned
including the devil and his fallen angels. There are several words
rendered as Hell: Hades - A Greek word. It is the place of the
dead, the location of the person between death and resurrection.
(See Matt. 11:23; 16:18; Acts 11:27; 1 Cor. 15:55; Rev. 1:18; 6:8).
Gehenna - A Greek word. It was the place where dead bodies were
dumped and burned (2 Kings 23:13-14). Jesus used the word to
designate the place of eternal torment (Matt. 5:22,29,30; Mark
9:43; Luke 12:5). Sheol - A Hebrew word. It is the place of the
dead, not necessarily the grave, but the place the dead go to. It
is used of both the righteous (Psalm 16:10; 30:3; Isaiah 38:10) and
the wicked (Num. 16:33; Job. 24:19; Psalm 9:17). Hell is a place of
eternal fire (Matt. 25:41; Rev. 19:20). It was prepared for the
devil and his angels (Matt. 25:41) and will be the abode of the
wicked (Rev. 21:8) and the fallen angels (2 Pet. 2:4).

SAINT OF THE WEEK
- St. Vincent de Paul (1580-1660): September 27
The deathbed confession of a dying servant opened Vincent's eyes to
the crying spiritual needs of the peasantry of France. This seems
to have been a crucial moment in the life of the man from a small
farm in Gascony, France, who had become a priest with little more
ambition than to have a comfortable life.
It was the Countess de Gondi (whose servant he had helped) who
persuaded her husband to endow and support a group of able and
zealous missionaries who would work among poor tenant farmers and
country people in general. Vincent was too humble to accept
leadership at first, but after working for some time in Paris among
imprisoned galley-slaves, he returned to be the leader of what is
now known as the Congregation of the Mission, or the Vincentians.
These priests, with vows of poverty, chastity, obedience and
stability, were to devote themselves entirely to the people in
smaller towns and villages.
Later, Vincent established confraternities of charity for the
spiritual and physical relief of the poor and sick of each parish.
From these, with the help of St. Louise de Marillac, came the
Daughters of Charity, "whose convent is the sickroom, whose chapel
is the parish church, whose cloister is the streets of the city."
He organized the rich women of Paris to collect funds for his
missionary projects, founded several hospitals, collected relief
funds for the victims of war and ransomed over 1,200 galley slaves
from North Africa. He was zealous in conducting retreats for clergy
at a time when there was great laxity, abuse and ignorance among
them. He was a pioneer in clerical training and was instrumental in
establishing seminaries.
Most remarkably, Vincent was by temperament a very irascible
person--even his friends admitted it. He said that except for the
grace of God he would have been "hard and repulsive, rough and
cross." But he became a tender and affectionate man, very sensitive
to the needs of others.
Pope Leo XIII made him the patron of all charitable societies.
Outstanding among these, of course, is the Society of St. Vincent
de Paul, founded in 1833 by his admirer Blessed Frederic Ozanam
(September 7).

BOOK OF THE WEEK
"Creating a Successful Retirement: Finding Peace and Purpose," by
Richard P. Johnson, Ph. D. Liguori Publ., 1999.
-
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0764804979/ref=noism/christianspiritu/
Johnson believes that all retirees have two purposes in mind,
namely pursuing peace and finding purpose. If sought in earnest,
this thread can empower and transform ordinary plans for retirement
into an exciting journey of discovery and wild adventure. He hopes
that if one follows his pattern, even a mediocre retiree can find
retirement an ongoing ministry of serving Jesus.
Johnson maintains that retirement can be a wonderful time to
rediscover one's self, as one finds that Christ has great things in
store for a person. He believes each retiree should begin with an
assessment of one's focus. What do you want to make of this time?
What do you want to make of yourself? Have any great ambitions
which can now be fulfilled?
The author offers fifteen keys to help in this discovery process.
He offers ways to set the stage for this new adventure. He helps
readers to move away from external, material, achievement-oriented
definitions to more genuine spiritual definitions. Each chapter
contains real life stories, affirming prayers, and fifteen minute
exercises that offer guidance in formulating a successful plan.
Some chapter titles are: let go, reframe your attitudes, take
charge, grow well, find your wealth, seek peace, have dreams, have
fun, welcome change, honor yourself, become ageless, and get going.

JOKE OF THE WEEK
- Holy Humor
A father was approached by his small son who told him proudly, "I
know what the Bible means!"
His father smiled and replied, "What do you mean, you 'know' what
the Bible means?
The son replied, "I do know!"
"Okay," said his father. "What does the Bible mean?"
"That's easy, Daddy..." the young boy replied excitedly, "It stands
for 'Basic Information Before Leaving Earth."
=======
There was a very gracious lady who was mailing an old family Bible
to her brother in another part of the country.
"Is there anything breakable in here?" asked the postal clerk.
"Only the Ten Commandments." answered the lady.
========
"Somebody has said there are only two kinds of people in the world.
There are those who wake up in the morning and say, "Good morning,
Lord," and there are those who wake up in the morning and say,
"Good Lord, it's morning."
