WEEKEND READINGS
http://www.nccbuscc.org/nab/

Saturday: 1 Cor 4:6b-15; Ps. 145:17-18, 19-20, 21; Lk 6:1-5
Sunday: Wis 9:13-18b; Ps 90:3-4, 5-6, 12-13, 14-17; Phmn
9-10, 12-17; Lk 14:25-33

R. (1) In every age, O Lord, you have been our refuge.

You turn man back to dust,
saying, "Return, O children of men."
For a thousand years in your sight
are as yesterday, now that it is past,
or as a watch of the night.

You make an end of them in their sleep;
the next morning they are like the changing grass,
Which at dawn springs up anew,
but by evening wilts and fades.

Teach us to number our days aright,
that we may gain wisdom of heart.
Return, O LORD! How long?
Have pity on your servants!

Fill us at daybreak with your kindness,
that we may shout for joy and gladness all our days.
And may the gracious care of the LORD our God be ours;
prosper the work of our hands for us!
Prosper the work of our hands.

THEOLOGY NOTE OF THE WEEK

- Haplography

Haplography is a copyist error in which the copyist writes once
what should have been written twice. An example of this would be
writting 'rabit' when 'rabbit' should have been copied. In the case
of the biblical manuscripts, this error in copying would create a
textual variant which could be responsible for an apparent
contradiction in the text, which did not appear in the autograph.

SAINT OF THE WEEK

- St. Thomas of Villanova (1488-1555) - September 10

St. Thomas was from Castile in Spain and received his surname from
the town where he was raised. He received a superior education at
the University of Alcala and became a popular professor of
philosophy there.

After joining the Augustinian friars at Salamanca he was ordained
and resumed his teaching, despite a continuing absentmindedness and
poor memory. He became prior and then provincial of the friars,
sending the first Augustinians to the New World. He was nominated
by the emperor to the archbishopric of Granada, but refused. When
the see again became vacant he was pressured to accept. The money
his cathedral chapter gave him to furnish his house was given to a
hospital instead. His explanation to them was that "our Lord will
be better served by your money being spent on the poor in the
hospital. What does a poor friar like myself want with furniture?"

He wore the same habit that he had received in the novitiate,
mending it himself. The canons and domestics were ashamed of him,
but they could not convince him to change. Several hundred poor
came to Thomas's door each morning and received a meal, wine and
money. When criticized because he was at times being taken
advantage of, he replied, "If there are people who refuse to work,
that is for the governor and the police to deal with. My duty is to
assist and relieve those who come to my door." He took in orphans
and paid his servants for every deserted child they brought to him.
He encouraged the wealthy to imitate his example and be richer in
mercy and charity than they were in earthly possessions.

Criticized because he refused to be harsh or swift in correcting
sinners, he said, "Let him (the complainer) inquire whether St.
Augustine and St. John Chrysostom used anathemas and
excommunication to stop the drunkenness and blasphemy which were so
common among the people under their care."

As he lay dying, Thomas commanded that all the money he possessed
be distributed to the poor. His material goods were to be given to
the rector of his college. Mass was being said in his presence when
after Communion he breathed his last, reciting the words: "Into
your hands, O Lord, I commend my spirit."

Thomas of Villanova was already called in his lifetime "the
almsgiver" and "the father of the poor." He was canonized in 1658.

BOOK OF THE WEEK

"Brother Andre, Friend of the Suffering: Apostle of Saint Joseph,"
by Jean-Guy Dubuc. Ave Maria Press, 1999.
-
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/1594711909/ref=noism/christianspiritu/

Even seventy years after the death of this holy man, the
Congregation of the Holy Cross holds his memory dear to their
hearts. Pope John Paul II called him a man of prayer and friend of
the poor. He is dear to many for his compassion to the sick, his
devotion to Saint Joseph, and his role in the construction of the
majestic Oratory of St.Joseph in Montreal. In life and in death
this amazingly humble man was regarded as a miracle worker, a loyal
friend of St. Joseph, and a agent of Christ's love and compassion
to the many thousands of sick and suffering people who sought his
aid. "No, I am not a miracle worker. God healed you". How many
thousands of times did Br. Andre tell this to the sick who suddenly
were relieved of their illness.

All of Montreal was moved when the newspapers said that Brother
Andre was dead the morning of January 6, 1937. This humble man was
born as Alfred Bessete in 1845, the eighth member of his family. He
grew up in a poor family, whose father was a carpenter. Alfred
learned this occupation and later it came to good advantage when he
as a simple brother helped build the first little shrine to honor
St. Joseph. His order had qualms about keeping this man who seemed
to be illiterate and not of much use to anybody. But he grew to
become the faithful keeper of the gates to the monastery where he
spent much time counseling those who sought his advice. His
reputation as a healer surprised him, but he used the simplest of
methods to bring comfort from disease and broken bones, to name a
few.

Many who knew Br. Andre believe he will soon be named a saint of
the Catholic Church.

JOKE OF THE WEEK

- The Twenty and the One

A well-worn one-dollar bill and a similarly distressed
twenty-dollar bill arrived at a Federal Reserve Bank to be
retired.. As they moved along the conveyor belt to be burned, they
struck up a conversation...

The twenty-dollar bill reminisced about its travels all over the
country.

"I've had a pretty good life," the twenty proclaimed. "Why I've
been to Las Vegas and Atlantic City , the finest restaurants in New
York , performances on Broadway, and even a cruise to the Caribbean
"

"Wow!" said the one-dollar bill. "You've really had an exciting
life!"

"So tell me," says the twenty, "where have you been throughout your
lifetime?"

The one dollar bill replies, "Oh, I've been to the Methodist
Church, the Baptist Church, the Lutheran Church ."

The twenty-dollar bill interrupts, "What's a church?"

(Thanks, Carol!)
