This work bundles together three related works previously published
for different purposes.
Part One - "The Meaning of the Resurrection," examines the
evidence for the Resurrection and then treats its implications for
the life of the believer.
Part Two - "Encountering the Risen Christ," reflects on meeting
the risen Christ in his four modes of presence to us:
personal/historical, communal, sacramental and cosmic.
Part Three - "The Gift of the Spirit," notes the decisive role
of the Holy Spirit in the lives of early Christian believers, and
in our own as well. The theme running through these three parts is
that Jesus of Nazareth is risen, and that we can come to know him
and give evidence of his life and love in our own as well.

THEOLOGY NOTE OF THE WEEK
- Guilt
Being responsible for and accountable for an offense. Biblically,
it is the state of being under a present or pending consequence due
to a sin against God's Law. It is also an emotional state as well
as legal condition. Guilt feelings are used by the Holy Spirit to
inform the sinner of broken fellowship with God (Isaiah 59:2; John
16:8). Because of our guilt before God, we need reconciliation
(Rom. 5:6-9).

SAINT OF THE WEEK
- St. Rose of Lima (1586-1617) - Aug. 23
The first canonized saint of the New World has one characteristic
of all saints--the suffering of opposition--and another
characteristic which is more for admiration than for
imitation--excessive practice of mortification.
She was born to parents of Spanish descent in Lima, Peru, at a time
when South America was in its first century of evangelization. She
seems to have taken Catherine of Siena (April 29) as a model, in
spite of the objections and ridicule of parents and friends.
The saints have so great a love of God that what seems bizarre to
us, and is indeed sometimes imprudent, is simply a logical carrying
out of a conviction that anything that might endanger a loving
relationship with God must be rooted out. So, because her beauty
was so often admired, Rose used to rub her face with pepper to
produce disfiguring blotches. Later, she wore a thick circlet of
silver on her head, studded on the inside, like a crown of thorns.
When her parents fell into financial trouble, she worked in the
garden all day and sewed at night. Ten years of struggle against
her parents began when they tried to make Rose marry. They refused
to let her enter a convent, and out of obedience she continued her
life of penance and solitude at home as a member of the Third Order
of St. Dominic. So deep was her desire to live the life of Christ
that she spent most of her time at home in solitude.
During the last few years of her life, Rose set up a room in the
house where she cared for homeless children, the elderly and the
sick. This was a beginning of social services in Peru. Though
secluded in life and activity, she was brought to the attention of
Inquisition interrogators, who could only say that she was
influenced by grace.
What might have been a merely eccentric life was transfigured from
the inside. If we remember some unusual penances, we should also
remember the greatest thing about Rose: a love of God so ardent
that it withstood ridicule from without, violent temptation and
lengthy periods of sickness. When she died at 31, the city turned
out for her funeral. Prominent men took turns carrying her coffin.

BOOK OF THE WEEK
"Taking up the Cross: New Testament Interpretation through Latina
and Feminist Eyes," by Barbara Reid OP. Fortress Press, 2007.
-
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0800662083/ref=noism/christianspiritu/
Reid sets out to demonstrate clearly that Scripture does not allow,
much less encourage, men to be abusive to women. She shows how
women who gather to pray and study the Scriptures recognize their
personal dignity and can be faithful wives without allowing
themselves to be abused.
The author was moved to write this book when a student ten years
ago alerted her to the danger inherent in the way we speak and
preach about the cross. Mk 8:34 "If anyone wants to become my
follower, let them deny themselves and take up their cross and
follow me." The student had worked in a shelter for battered women
and she talked about the times when women finally break the ugly
silence about the abuse they had suffered. Often these women went
for help from their pastors who too often told them to go home and
endure their sufferings as their way of carrying the cross and
being true to their marriage vows.
In the story of Abraham and Isaac, Reid wonders why Abraham didn't
argue with God regarding the sacrificing his only son just as he
had done in the Sodom and Gomorrah story. She greatly disagrees
with Jephte who killed his daughter after making a hasty vow and
thinking that he was acting righteously.
Reid includes amazing stories of abused women who came to
enlightenment after gathering with other women and studying the
true meaning of the Scriptures. This book is for the general
public, men and women, but especially for women everywhere who
erroneously believe they are honoring God and their vow by staying
in abusive situations.

JOKE OF THE WEEK
- Shirley & Marcy
An Irish mother was concerned about her kindergarten son walking to
school. He didn't want his mother to walk with him. She wanted to
give him the feeling that he had some independence but yet know
that he was safe.
So she had an idea of how to handle it. She asked a neighbor if she
would please follow him to school in the mornings, staying at a
distance, so he probably wouldn't notice her.
She said that since she was up early with her toddler anyway, it
would be a good way for them to get some exercise as well, so she
agreed.
The next school day, the neighbor and her little girl set out
following behind Timmy as he walked to school with another neighbor
girl he knew. She did this for the whole week.
As the two walked and chatted, kicking stones and twigs, Timmy's
little friend noticed the same lady was following them as she
seemed to do every day all
week. Finally she said to Timmy, "Have you noticed that lady
following us to school all week? Do you know her?"
Timmy nonchalantly replied, "Yeah, I know who she is."
The little girl said, "Well, who is she?"
"That's just Shirley Goodnest," Timmy replied, "and her daughter
Marcy."
"Shirley Goodnest? Who the heck is she and why is she following us?"
"Well," Timmy explained, "every night my Mom makes me say the 23rd
Psalm with my prayers, 'cuz she worries about me so much. And in
the Psalm, it says, 'Shirley Goodnest and Marcy shall follow me all
the days of my life', so I guess I'll just have to get used to it!"
(Thanks, Carol!)
