WEEKEND READINGS
http://www.nccbuscc.org/nab/
Saturday: Eph 2:19-22; Ps 117:1bc, 2; Jn 20:24-29
Sunday: Is 66:10-14c; Ps 66:1-3, 4-5, 6-7, 16, 20; Gal
6:14-18; Lk 10:1-12, 17-20
R. (1) Let all the earth cry out to God with joy.
Shout joyfully to God, all the earth,
sing praise to the glory of his name;
proclaim his glorious praise.
Say to God, "How tremendous are your deeds!"
"Let all on earth worship and sing praise to you,
sing praise to your name!"
Come and see the works of God,
his tremendous deeds among the children of Adam.
He has changed the sea into dry land;
through the river they passed on foot;
therefore let us rejoice in him.
He rules by his might forever.
Hear now, all you who fear God, while I declare
what he has done for me.
Blessed be God who refused me not
my prayer or his kindness!

THEOLOGY NOTE OF THE WEEK
- God
The supreme being of the universe. He is the creator of all things
(Isaiah 44:24). He alone is God (Isaiah 45:21,22; 46:9; 47:8).
There have never been any Gods before Him nor will there be any
after Him (Isaiah 43:10). God is God from all eternity (Psalm
90:2). In Exodus 3:14, God revealed His name to His people. The
name commonly known in English is Jehovah. This comes from the four
Hebrew consonants that spell the name of God. (YHWH)
God is a Trinity, knows all things (1 John 3:20), can do all things
(Jer. 32:17,27 - except those things against His nature like lie,
break His word, cheat, steal, etc.), and is everywhere all the time
(Psalm 119:7-12).

SAINT OF THE WEEK
- St. Gregory Grassi and Companions
Christian missionaries have often gotten caught in the crossfire of
wars against their own countries. When the governments of Britain,
Germany, Russia and France forced substantial territorial
concessions from the Chinese in 1898, anti-foreign sentiment grew
very strong among many Chinese people.
Gregory Grassi was born in Italy in 1833, ordained in 1856 and sent
to China five years later. Gregory was later ordained Bishop of
North Shanxi. With 14 other European missionaries and 14 Chinese
religious, he was martyred during the short but bloody Boxer
Uprising of 1900.
Twenty-six of these martyrs were arrested on the orders of Yu
Hsien, the governor of Shanxi province. They were hacked to death
on July 9, 1900. Five of them were Friars Minor; seven were
Franciscan Missionaries of Mary -- the first martyrs of their
congregation. Seven were Chinese seminarians and Secular
Franciscans; four martyrs were Chinese laymen and Secular
Franciscans. The other three Chinese laymen killed in Shanxi simply
worked for the Franciscans and were rounded up with all the others.
Three Italian Franciscans were martyred that same week in the
province of Hunan. All these martyrs were beatified in 1946.

BOOK OF THE WEEK
"The Future is Mestizo: life where cultures meet," by Virgilio
Elizondo. University Press, 2000.
-
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0870815768/ref=noism/christianspiritu/
The author is founder and former president of the Mexican-American
Cultural Center in San Antonino, Texas. He brings to this book his
theological and teaching expertise and his intense love of his
Mexican ties.
Elizondo tells his readers that the conditioning of a people is not
just an aid in the proclamation of the Gospel, but it is the medium
through God chooses to reveal himself. This author offers a
distinct Hispanic perspective on Jesus as a mestizo. He says that
the future of the mestizo embraces all the aspects of the human
being: the cultural, the political, the social, and the religious
aspects of humanity. This book reads like a religious philosophical
treatise.
But there are places when Elizondo mourns the way Mexican
seminarians are often treated and even turned away from seminaries.
Great festivals in his area do not seem to notice the poor
Mexicans; these events often put the Anglo in the place of
prominence, even though it is said to be a "Mexican celebration."
High praise is given to Our Lady of Guadalupe...no one can take her
away from the Mexican population, even though he admits that often
the Mexicans see that celebration that feast is more important than
attending weekend Masses.
In his epilogue, Elizondo writes: "What needs to change radically
is the social appreciation of mestizaje from that of being a pariah
to that of being a gift."

WEB SITE OF THE WEEK
Christians Practicing Yoga
- http://www.christianspracticingyoga.com/altsite/index.htm
"We are Christians from a broad range of traditions: Baptist,
Catholic, Episcopal, Lutheran, Methodist, Orthodox, Presbyterian,
United Church, Church of the Savior and a variety of Free Church
traditions. The breadth of our network reveals a truth: Christians
connect instinctively with an embodied spiritual practice that
inclines toward deeper prayer. It is embedded in our spiritual DNA
to go to God the way God came to us--in and through the body.
"Christians practicing yoga represents a growing community of
people with its arms open in welcome to the following groups of
people. We have also included a reference to the area of our
website that may be most applicable to specific groups."

JOKE OF THE WEEK
- Mind game . . .
No cheating! Don't jump to the answer, just scroll down and answer
each question one at a time...
Take this test mentally, don't write down your answers, and don't
shout them out.
1. Pick a number from 2 to 9. It can be 2 or it can be 9, or any
number in between.
2. Take that number that you've chosen, and multiply it by 9.
3. That should give you a two digit number. Take those two digits
and add them together.
4. Take the resulting number and subtract 5 from it.
5. Take that number and correspond it to the alphabet, numbering
the letters. A=1, B=2, C=3, and so on.
6. Take your letter, and think of a country that begins with that
letter.
7. Take the last letter in the name of that country, and think of
an animal.
8. Now, take the last letter in the name of that animal, and think
of a color.
9. But always remember, that there are no orange kangaroos in
Denmark!!
