http://www.nccbuscc.org/nab/
Saturday: Is 6:1-8; Ps 93:1ab, 1cd-2, 5; Mt 10:24-33
Sunday: Dt 30:10-14; Ps 69:14, 17, 30-31, 33-34, 36, 37;
Col1:15-20; Lk 10:25-37
R. (cf. 33) Turn to the Lord in your need, and you will live.
I pray to you, O LORD,
for the time of your favor, O God!
In your great kindness answer me
with your constant help.
Answer me, O LORD, for bounteous is your kindness:
in your great mercy turn toward me.
I am afflicted and in pain;
let your saving help, O God, protect me.
I will praise the name of God in song,
and I will glorify him with thanksgiving.
"See, you lowly ones, and be glad;
you who seek God, may your hearts revive!
For the LORD hears the poor,
and his own who are in bonds he spurns not."
For God will save Zion
and rebuild the cities of Judah.
The descendants of his servants shall inherit it,
and those who love his name shall inhabit it.

SAINT OF THE WEEK
- St. Bonaventure (1221-1274)
Bonaventure, Franciscan, theologian, doctor of the Church, was both
learned and holy. Because of the spirit that filled him and his
writings, he was at first called the Devout Doctor; but in more
recent centuries he has been known as the Seraphic Doctor after the
"Seraphic Father" Francis because of the truly Franciscan spirit he
possessed.
Born in Bagnoregio, a town in central Italy, he was cured of a
serious illness as a boy through the prayers of Francis of Assisi.
Later, he studied the liberal arts in Paris. Inspired by Francis
and the example of the friars, especially of his master in
theology, Alexander of Hales, he entered the Franciscan Order, and
became in turn a teacher of theology in the university. Chosen as
minister general of the Order in 1257, he was God's instrument in
bringing it back to a deeper love of the way of St. Francis, both
through the life of Francis which he wrote at the behest of the
brothers and through other works which defended the Order or
explained its ideals and way of life.

BOOK OF THE WEEK
"Buddha and Jesus: Conversations," by Carrin Dunne. Templegate
Publishers, 1979.
-
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/087243057X/ref=noism/christianspiritu/
I love this little book for its simplicity and clarity, as well as
for the warm conversational voices of the two characters. Using the
literary device of an imagined meeting between Buddha and Jesus
(and ignoring the time/space warp such a meeting would have
entailed), this text, written like a dialogue, finds the common
ground and highlights the differences between the philosophies and
teachings of these two great spiritual teachers. Other texts may go
deeper, but this one has much charm and provides an excellent
window into the two traditions of Buddhism and Christianity.

WEB SITE OF THE WEEK
What is Franciscan spirituality?
The spiritual pathway blazed by St. Francis of Assisi has attracted
hundreds of thousands of followers through the centuries. Many
have pursued formal affiliation with the order, but, for most of
us, it is about practicing these principles and disciplines in our
ordinary, everyday lives. This website provides a good
introduction to Francsicans spirituality. Be sure to use the Next
button at the bottom of the pages to review all of the lessons.

JOKE OF THE WEEK
- The Pope and the Rabbi
Several centuries ago, the Pope decreed that all the Jews had to
convert to Catholicism or leave Italy. There was a huge outcry from
the Jewish community, so the Pope offered a deal. He'd have a
religious debate with the leader of the Jewish community. If the
Jews won, they could stay in Italy; if the Pope won, they'd have to
convert or leave.
The Jewish people met and picked an aged and wise rabbi to
represent them in the debate. However, as the rabbi spoke no
Italian, and the Pope spoke no Yiddish, they agreed that it would
be a "silent" debate.
On the chosen day the Pope and rabbi sat opposite each other.
The Pope raised his hand and showed three fingers.
The rabbi looked back and raised one finger.
Next, the Pope waved his finger around his head.
The rabbi pointed to the ground where he sat.
The Pope brought out a communion wafer and a chalice of wine.
The rabbi pulled out an apple.
With that, the Pope stood up and declared himself beaten and said
that the rabbi was too clever. The Jews could stay in Italy.
Later the cardinals met with the Pope and asked him what had
happened.
The Pope said, "First I held up three fingers to represent the
Trinity. He responded by holding up a single finger to remind me
there is still only one God common to both our beliefs.
"Then, I waved my finger around my head to show him that God was
all around us. He responded by pointing to the ground to show that
God was also right here with us.
"I pulled out the wine and wafer to show that God absolves us of
all our sins. He pulled out an apple to remind me of the original
sin.
"He bested me at every move and I could not continue."
Meanwhile, the Jewish community gathered to ask the rabbi how he'd
won.
"I haven't a clue," the rabbi said..
"First, he told me that we had three days to get out of Italy, so I
gave him the finger.
"Then he tells me that the whole country would be cleared of Jews
and I told him that we were staying right here."
"And then what?" asked a woman.
"Who knows?" said the rabbi. "He took out his lunch so I took out
mine."
(Thanks, Carol.)
