SPIRITUAL GROWTH RESOURCE OF THE MONTH

"Jesus on the Cross: WHY?"
- by Philip St. Romain

- Free shipping on orders of two or more books!

What exactly do we mean when we say that Jesus died for our sins?
What are the implications of his death for our lives today? In this
book, author Philip St. Romain elaborates an understanding of the
crucifixion that makes sense today, and shows how this
understanding and appreciation can make a difference in people's
lives. St. Romain's reflections focus on several themes, including
the crucifixion as a fulfillment of the Jewish traditions of a
suffering servant; as a new covenant between God and the human
race; as an expiatory sacrifice; as a means of breaking the power
of sin. His discussions are carried on in pastoral terms derived
from scripture and his experience of living and working in the
world. Most chapters include a section on catechetical
considerations of a renewed understanding of the crucifixion, as
well as questions for personal reflection and discussion.

Mt 6:24-34
Sunday: Zec 12:10-11; 13:1; Ps 63:2, 3-4, 5-6, 8-9; Gal
3:26-29; Lk 9:18-24

R. My soul is thirsting for you, O Lord my God.

O God, you are my God whom I seek;
for you my flesh pines and my soul thirsts
like the earth, parched, lifeless and without water.

Thus have I gazed toward you in the sanctuary
to see your power and your glory,
For your kindness is a greater good than life;
my lips shall glorify you.

Thus will I bless you while I live;
lifting up my hands, I will call upon your name.
As with the riches of a banquet shall my soul be satisfied,
and with exultant lips my mouth shall praise you.

You are my help,
and in the shadow of your wings I shout for joy.
My soul clings fast to you;
your right hand upholds me.

THEOLOGY NOTE OF THE WEEK

- Gifts, Spiritual

Spiritual abilities given by God for the purpose of building up the
church. Every Christian has at least one (1 Cor. 7:7). They are
listed and discussed in different places in the N.T. (Rom. 12:6-8;
1 Cor. 12:4-11, 28-30; Eph. 4:7-12). Following is a list of the
gifts arranged in two groups. The first are gifts that require
supernatural intervention and are possessed only by true
Christians. The second are gifts that do not require supernatural
intervention. Even non-Christians can have the second group of
gifts. A further issue is whether or not the gifts are still in use
today. Some believe they ceased with the apostles and the closing
of the Canon (the completion of the writings of the Bible) and they
are no longer needed for the building up of the body of Christ
(Eph. 4:12). Others believe the gifts are still in use but not in
the pure apostolic sense. In other words, they are still in use but
not in the same way possessed by the apostles. Instead, they are
available to the believer if and when God decides it is beneficial
to use them.

SAINT OF THE WEEK

- St. John Fisher (1469-1535)

John Fisher is usually associated with Erasmus, Thomas More and
other Renaissance humanists. His life, therefore, did not have the
external simplicity found in the lives of some saints. Rather, he
was a man of learning, associated with the intellectuals and
political leaders of his day. He was interested in the contemporary
culture and eventually became chancellor at Cambridge. He had been
made a bishop at 35, and one of his interests was raising the
standard of preaching in England. Fisher himself was an
accomplished preacher and writer. His sermons on the penitential
psalms were reprinted seven times before his death. With the coming
of Lutheranism, he was drawn into controversy. His eight books
against heresy gave him a leading position among European
theologians.

In 1521 he was asked to study the problem of Henry VIII's marriage.
He incurred Henry's anger by defending the validity of the king's
marriage with Catherine of Aragon and later by rejecting Henry's
claim to be the supreme head of the Church of England.

In an attempt to be rid of him, Henry first had him accused of not
reporting all the "revelations" of the nun of Kent, Elizabeth
Barton. John was summoned, in feeble health, to take the oath to
the new Act of Succession. He and Thomas More refused because the
Act presumed the legality of Henry's divorce and his claim to be
head of the English Church. They were sent to the Tower of London,
where Fisher remained 14 months without trial. They were finally
sentenced to life imprisonment and loss of goods.

When the two were called to further interrogations, they remained
silent. Fisher was tricked, on the supposition he was speaking
privately as a priest, and declared again that the king was not
supreme head. The king, further angered that the pope had made John
Fisher a cardinal, had him brought to trial on the charge of high
treason. He was condemned and executed, his body left to lie all
day on the scaffold and his head hung on London Bridge. More was
executed two weeks later.

BOOK OF THE WEEK

"The Lively Garden Prayer Book," by William Cleary. Forest of
Peace, 1997.
-
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0939516357/ref=noism/christianspiritu/

This book is guaranteed to give any gardener more springtime life
than a good rain or dose of manure. It is a book chuck full of
prayer poems and backyard theology that will make any reader aware
that God is indeed in your yard, in your garden, whether that be a
window box or a garden the size of Eden.

In a curious sort of way the author takes the alphabet and carves a
poem/prayer about every garden plant you can think of and some you
have never heard of but wish you had. For each plant, the author
gives hints how to plant, care for, and harvest the produce. The
poem that follows his explanations is a prayer in gratitude to God
for thinking up this type of plant and making it available to
humans.

Here is an example in the section on Kohlrabi:
We give you thanks, Strange Mystery of God,
That we are weird like thee.
Even our name, Kohlrabi, hints,
We're nature's anomaly.

To the grandeur of garlic, Cleary wrote:
Just a dash of garlic works the magic,
Blessing meals with pure beatitude,
Rousing, strong, vivacious, holy flavor,
Yes, a foretaste of all heaven's food.
To the choirs of God's most holy angels
What a blessing plants like us can bring,
Adding to the music of the chorus
Just a whiff of garlic when they sing.

After the alphabet, Cleary addresses such topics as beetles,
aphids, ticks, fleas, bats, inch worms, swallows, dogs, and cats.

This in indeed a fun book written as only Cleary can write.
