Saturday: 1 Jn 5:14-21; Ps 147:12-13, 14-15, 19-20; Jn 3:22-30
Sunday: Is 42:1-4, 6-7; Ps 29:1-2, 3-4, 3, 9-10; Acts
10:34-38 ; Mk 1:7-11

R. (11b) The Lord will bless his people with peace.

Give to the LORD, you sons of God,
give to the LORD glory and praise,
Give to the LORD the glory due his name;
adore the LORD in holy attire.

The voice of the LORD is over the waters,
the LORD, over vast waters.
The voice of the LORD is mighty;
the voice of the LORD is majestic.

The God of glory thunders,
and in his temple all say, "Glory!"
The LORD is enthroned above the flood;
the LORD is enthroned as king forever.

THEOLOGY NOTE OF THE WEEK

- Anthropic Principle

The idea that the universe exhibits elements of design specifically
for the purpose of containing intelligent beings; namely, humans.
Much debate surrounds this issue. Is the universe necessarily
arranged by God so as to make life possible or is it simply that
the universe is godless and that life came into existence due to
the chance state that we now find it in?

BOOK OF THE WEEK

"Christian Martyrs for a Muslim People," by Martin McGee OSB.
Paulist Press, 2008.
- -
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0809145391/ref=noism/christianspiritu/

Religious men and women who chose to minister in Algeria in the mid
1900's knew their lives were in danger every moment. "Depart or
die" was the admonition given to foreigners. But many refused to
give up their "ministry of presence" among the men and women of the
fundamentalistic nation. Many chose to continue their daily regime
of chanting the Divine Office and working among the poor and the
illiterate. The missionaries had no intention of "converting the
Islams." Their presence was their witness to the Christ to whom
they had dedicated their lives.

Nineteen priests and religious sisters, including seven Trappist
monks, chose to stay in Algeria; they ultimately paid for this
dedication with their lives. Through their lives of witnessing to
Christ, they won the admiration and love of the Algerian people.
This love did not cease with the deaths of these valiant persons.

This is a story of hope for reconciliation between Christians and
Muslims. This is a testimony of courage and selflessness that will
inspire many to transcend denominational differences and come
together in respect and understanding. Their Archbishop Henri
Teissier wrote in July, 2006, "These years of crisis deepened the
relationships between Christians and Muslims not only in Algeria,
but also among numerous groups of people, Christian or Muslim,
living in other countries and who were informed about what was
going on, especially about the kidnapping and subsequent
assassination of the seven monks."

WEB SITE OF THE WEEK

The First True Humans
- http://innerexplorations.com/chtheomortext/first.htm

My good friend and mentor, James Arraj, has written a nice little
piece on this topic. Here's how it begins:

"What does the first true humans mean? It means people just like
us: the same bodies, the same psyches, the same spirits. We are
surrounded by a media barrage about hominids: Australopitecens,
Neanderthals, Homo Erectus, etc., meant to tell us something about
the first true humans. And it is easy to confuse these prehumans
with genuine humans. But they are not. It might have been on the
way to us, but they are not us yet, and this distinction is very
important especially from a theological point of view. What we want
to know is who are genuine humans from a theological point of view
so that they belong to the realm of grace, and are those people
about whom we will talk about original justice and original sin."
