Sunday: 2 Sm 7:1-5, 8b-12, 14a, 16; Ps 89:2-3, 4-5, 27, 29;

R. (2a) For ever I will sing the goodness of the Lord.

The promises of the LORD I will sing forever;
through all generations my mouth shall proclaim your faithfulness.
For you have said, "My kindness is established forever";
in heaven you have confirmed your faithfulness.

"I have made a covenant with my chosen one,
I have sworn to David my servant:
Forever will I confirm your posterity
and establish your throne for all generations."

"He shall say of me, 'You are my father,
my God, the Rock, my savior.'
Forever I will maintain my kindness toward him,
and my covenant with him stands firm."

SAINT OF THE WEEK

- December 22nd. St. Frances Cabrini.

This saint, distinguished for her work for orphans in the United
States, was born in the Northern Italian town of Pavia in 1870. Her
wish to live the religious life was initially frustrated by poor
health but her work in an orphanage in the diocese attracted the
attention of a wider circle. Her foundation of the missionary
Sisters of the Sacred Heart was approved in the 1880's and in 1889
she arrived in New York with a number of sisters, at the invitation
of the archbishop, to work among Italian immigrants, who were
suffering from acute spiritual neglect. The lack of infrastructure
was so crippling that at first she was advised to return to Italy,
but she persevered and various foundations, orphanages and schools
followed, including some in Latin America, catering for many
besides the Italians among whom she had originally come to work.
She died of malaria in Chicago in 1917 and was canonised in 1946.

BOOK OF THE WEEK

"That the World May Believe," by Hans Kung. Sheed and Ward, 1963.
-
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B001E6TY9W/ref=noism/christianspiritu/

Are you a reader who says that Hans Kung is too difficult to
understand? 'Tis true some of his later books do provide some very
intense reading, but one might try cutting one's teeth on a much
earlier book, written for beginners, called "That the World May
Believe." Written in the form of letters to a friend, this Hans
Kung book explores a variety of simple but important topics.

The topics of the two page letters are: Do you discuss things with
Protestants? Does a Catholic have to defend everything? Is
criticism enough? Was it always like this? Our liturgy. Christians,
divided for ever? Outside the Church no salvation? What happens to
pagans? Are you superstitious? Do you have doubts?

Hans Kung calls this book private letters written not for
theologians but for his friend. He recognizes there are many
unsolved problems in the teaching of the Church and he says he is
not trying to solve all the problems but to give simple answers to
his friend's questions.

An easy read and yet filled with profound answers to difficult
questions.

JOKE OF THE WEEK

- Blessings every year . . .

As a teacher, Ms. Jones was very curious about how each of her
students celebrated Christmas. She called on young Patrick Murphy.
"Tell me Patrick, what do you do at Christmas Time?", she asked.

Patrick addressed the class, "Well Ms. Jones, me and my twelve
brothers and sisters go to Mass and we sing hymns. Then we come
home very late and we put mince pies by the back door and hang up
our stockings. Then, all excited, we go to bed and wait for Father
Christmas to come with all our toys."

Very nice, Patrick she said. "Now, Jimmy Brown, what do you do at
Christmas?"

"Well, Ms. Jones, me and my sister also go to church with Mum &
Dad, and we sing carols and we get home ever so late. We put
cookies and milk by the chimney and hang up our stockings. We
hardly sleep, waiting for Santa to bring our presents."

Realizing there was a Jewish boy in class and not wanting to leave
him out of the discussion, she asked, "Isaac Cohen, what do you do
at Christmas?"

Isaac said, "Well, it's the same thing every year. Dad comes home
from the office, we all pile into the Rolls Royce, then we drive to
his toy factory. When we get inside and look at all the empty
shelves, we sing 'What a Friend we have in Jesus'."

"Then we all go to the Bahamas."

(Thanks to Lisa, my wife, for this one.)
