Make me what Thou wouldst have me. I bargain for nothing. I make no terms. I seek for no previous information whither Thou art taking me. I will be what Thou wilt make me, and all that Thou wilt make me. I say not, I will follow Thee whithersoever Thou goest, for I am weak, but I give myself to Thee, to lead me anywhither
- John Henry Cardinal Newman (1801-1890), Parochial Sermons, v.V.

(Try to pray this prayer of surrender as sincerely as possible.  Notice your areas of resistance, and offer them to God for conversion.)

1 Jn 3:22-4:6;    Ps 2:7-8, 10-12;    Mt 4:12-17, 23-25

R. I will give you all the nations for an inheritance.

The LORD said to me, "You are my Son;
this day I have begotten you.
Ask of me and I will give you
the nations for an inheritance
and the ends of the earth for your possession."

And now, O kings, give heed;
take warning, you rulers of the earth.
Serve the LORD with fear, and rejoice before him;
with trembling rejoice.

He went around all of Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom, and curing every disease and illness among the people.

Jesus is shown in the readings this week as the great teacher-healer. He opens up the scriptures to greater understanding and is a source of inspiration to his listeners. He is also the comforter and healer, even of physical ills. Ever since biblical times, Jesus' followers have attempted to pattern their ministry around teaching and healing, establishing great centers of learning and hospitals to serve the suffering. Today, we are reminded that they are a reflection of Christ's life of service to all.

O Lord, bless our schools and hospitals with your spirit of service, we pray.

The Adornment of the Spiritual Marriage, by St. John of Rusybroeck (1293-1381)

So, when a person possesses the natural rest in bare vacancy, whilst in all his works he has himself in mind, and he continues obstinately disobedient in his self-will, he cannot be united with God; for he lives without charity in unlikeness to God. And here begins the third contrary way, which is the most noxious of all; and this is an unrighteous life, full of ghostly error and of all perversity.

- Chapter 66: Showing how some people live contrary to these exercises.
