R. (6b) The Lord upholds my life.

O God, by your name save me,
and by your might defend my cause.
O God, hear my prayer;
hearken to the words of my mouth.

For the haughty men have risen up against me,
the ruthless seek my life;
they set not God before their eyes.

Behold, God is my helper;
the Lord sustains my life.
Freely will I offer you sacrifice;
I will praise your name, O LORD, for its goodness.

- Pantheism

This is an identification of the universe with their god. With this view there is a blurring of the distinction between the Creator and the creation as well as an attack upon the personality and nature of God. Pantheism tends to equate God with the process and existence of the universe and states that the universe is god and god is the universe. This is not true because the true God is the creator of the universe (Isaiah 44:24) and therefore separate from it.

Book (movie, CD) of the Week

Spiritual Direction and the Encounter with Christ, the Friend of the Bridegroom, by Thomas H. Green S.J. Ave Maris Press, 2000.
- http://www.amazon.com/dp/
0877939381
/?tag=christianspiritu

    Whether you are a director or a directee, this book contains valuable information and healthy advice for you. It gives the story of how Father Green became a director, how he responds to direction, and how he aims to direct others.
   Especially valuable is the chapter on the qualifications of a director for the one who is seeking direction. Five qualifications seem necessary, with an additional one for good measure.  They are: compatibility, shared vision, objectivity, a good listener, confidentiality, and "ahead of me on the journey".
   Green notes signs that a person needs a director, signs when direction should be terminated, signs that the directee is simply wasting his/her time, aids as to directing one who has visions and spiritual visits from angels, the benefits directors can receive from the process, saints and models for direction, ways to delve into deeper prayer, dangers of emotional involvement, and much more.
   Direction implies a risk and a reward. This book discloses the essence, the process, and the aim of spiritual direction.
   On a lighter note, the author speaks of his introduction into kindergarten when he had not reached the approved age. His mother said to the teacher, "Please take him. I am drained by all his questions."  This book by that "all grown up priest" answers many questions folks may have about spiritual direction.

Saint of the Week
- http://www.americancatholic.org/features/saints/saint.aspx?id=1150

Sts. Cosmas and Damian (d. 303?): September 26

  Nothing is known of their lives except that they suffered martyrdom in Syria during the persecution of Diocletian.
   A church erected on the site of their burial place was enlarged by the emperor Justinian. Devotion to the two saints spread rapidly in both East and West. A famous basilica was erected in their honor in Constantinople. Their names were placed in the canon of the Mass, probably in the sixth century.
   Legend says that they were twin brothers born in Arabia, who became skilled doctors. They were among those who are venerated in the East as the "moneyless ones" because they did not charge a fee for their services. It was impossible that such prominent persons would escape unnoticed in time of persecution: They were arrested and beheaded.
   Nine centuries later, Francis of Assisi (October 4) rebuilt the dilapidated San Damiano chapel outside Assisi.
