http://new.usccb.org/calendar/index.cfm?showLit=1&action=month

Saturday:  Am 9:11-15;    Ps 85:9--14;    Mt 9:14-17
Sunday:  Ez 2:2-5;    Ps 123:1-4;    2 Cor 12:7-10;    Mk 6:1-6

R. (2cd) Our eyes are fixed on the Lord, pleading for his mercy.

To you I lift up my eyes
who are enthroned in heaven --
As the eyes of servants
are on the hands of their masters.

As the eyes of a maid
are on the hands of her mistress,
So are our eyes on the LORD, our God,
till he have pity on us.

Have pity on us, O LORD, have pity on us,
for we are more than sated with contempt;
our souls are more than sated
with the mockery of the arrogant,
with the contempt of the proud.

- Ontological Trinity

The Ontological Trinity is the teaching concerning the Trinity that all three persons within the Godhead are equal in nature, essence, and attributes.  Each member of the Trinity is equal in omniscience, omnipresence, omnipotence, holiness, etc.  It differs from the Economic Trinity which deals with the relationship of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit withing the Godhead and to us.

Book (movie, CD) of the Week

Women in Ministry, by Phyllis Zagano. Paulist Press. 2012.

This book is all about the possibility of women becoming  deacons in the Catholic Church. It follows on a question that Pope Paul VI asked in the Second Vatican Council about renewing the diaconate as a permanent order of ministry . His question was "What about women deacons?" Zagano seeks to address three questions in her book:
a)   Is the inclusion of women in the permanent diaconate part of the unfinished business of Vatican II?
b)   What are the ecumenical implications of women ordained as deacons?
c)   Did Pope Benedict XVI envision the inclusion of women in the diaconate?
This blessed and sacred form of ministry is examined in the light of early church practices, current realities of communion with Rome, and implications for the participation of women in church government.  The question remains: "Why not?"
When Benedict spoke in a German television interview in 2006, he maintained that women cannot become priests because Christ  chose only male apostles. He indicates that Canon Law does not allow women to become priests but "I believe that women with their energy and strength, with their superiority, with what I would call their spiritual power, will know how to make their own space. And we will try and listen to God so as not to stand in their way." Exactly what Benedict means has yet to be determined.
The author holds to the words of Acts 6:1-6 wherein deacons were named and received the laying on of hands. Therefore the choice of deacons is up to the Church, to be confirmed by the successors to the apostles. Zagano writes that it would seem today the Church has both the authority and the power to ordain women deacons.

Saint of the Week
- http://www.americancatholic.org/features/saints/saint.aspx?id=1440

- St. Veronica Giuliani (1660-1727): July 10

Veronica's desire to be like Christ crucified was answered with the stigmata.
Veronica was born in Mercatelli, Italy. It is said that when her mother Benedetta was dying she called her five daughters to her bedside and entrusted each of them to one of the five wounds of Jesus. Veronica was entrusted to the wound below Christ's heart.
At the age of 17, Veronica joined the Poor Clares directed by the Capuchins. Her father had wanted her to marry, but she convinced him to allow her to become a nun. In her first years in the monastery, she worked in the kitchen, infirmary and sacristy and also served as portress. At the age of 34, she was made novice mistress, a position she held for 22 years. When she was 37, Veronica received the stigmata. Life was not the same after that.
Church authorities in Rome wanted to test Veronica's authenticity and so conducted an investigation. She lost the office of novice mistress temporarily and was not allowed to attend Mass except on Sundays or holy days. Through all of this Veronica did not become bitter, and the investigation eventually restored her as novice mistress.
Though she protested against it, at the age of 56 she was elected abbess, an office she held for 11 years until her death. Veronica was very devoted to the Eucharist and to the Sacred Heart. She offered her sufferings for the missions. Veronica was canonized in 1839.

Joke of the Week

- On safari...

A big game hunter goes on safari with his wife and his mother-in-law. One morning, the wife wakes up to find her mother gone. Immediately, she awakens up her husband and they both set off to find the old woman.
Suddenly, they break into a clearing and there's the mother-in-law, standing face-to-face with a ferocious lion!
"Quick, darling," the wife shouts frantically, "Do something!"
"Oh, no," the husband says, "That lion got himself into this mess. Let him get himself out!"

Facts about Obamacare
- http://obamacarefacts.com/
- http://www.healthcare.gov/

An old saying has it that we're entitled to our opinions, but not our facts, and there's probably no topic more ornerous these days than the 2009 Affordable Healthcare Act (ACA, also known as Obamacare).  Demonized by the politial Right as the death of liberty and a "government takeover of healthcare" while detested by the political Left for not being a Single Payer system (like Medicare), it's difficult to sort out what's what and what it means for you.  These three sites can help you to get a better understanding of what's already in place, and what's in store.
There will probably be no hotter potato in the 2012 U.S. Presidential election than healthcare.  Inform yourself so as not to get caught up in media bias and political sound bytes.  This is an issue with important implications for millions.
