Saturday:  Is 6:1-8;    Ps 93:1, 2, 5;    Mt 10:24-33
Sunday:  Am 7:12-15;    Ps 85:9-10, 11-12, 13-14;    Eph 1:3-14;    Mk 6:7-13

R. (8) Lord, let us see your kindness, and grant us your salvation.

I will hear what God proclaims;
the LORD --for he proclaims peace.
Near indeed is his salvation to those who fear him,
glory dwelling in our land.

Kindness and truth shall meet;
justice and peace shall kiss.
Truth shall spring out of the earth,
and justice shall look down from heaven.

The LORD himself will give his benefits;
our land shall yield its increase.
Justice shall walk before him,
and prepare the way of his steps.

Book (movie, CD) of the Week

Catechism of the Summa Theologica, by R.P. Thomas Pegues O.P.   Roman Catholic Books, 1922. (reprinted, 2009, 2012)
- http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/1477562621/ref=noism/christianspiritu/

- also available in hardback and for Kindle

   During my contemplative retreat in the summer of 2012, I decided that I would not go to the library and check out a book for reading. But one day I was lured to the library and found this small volume devoted to the Summa Theologica, and after reading a few pages I was hooked. I was amazed that whereas in the large Summa, St. Thomas takes two or three pages to answer even a simple question he introduced, here Pegues could give the answer in a Yes or a No, or in a few lines. I decided that in my contemplative prayer time, I was about learning more about God and the attributes of God, and that St. Thomas Aquinas could be my best teacher.  It had been a long time since I lunged around the three big blue volumes of the Summa when I was studying for a Master's in theology. Perhaps it was time to go back to Thomas for a refresher.
   Pegues opened the First Part on God as Sovereign. I began reading the Summa with new eyes as I studied the attributes of God and was amazed at all God has done and is doing that I might be all I am called to be. God gave me being, life, Jesus as Saviour, creation, the Trinity, the angels, an intellect and will, grace sanctifying and actual, the Decalogue, the virtues theological and moral, body and soul,  five senses, passions, heaven as a goal, human companions,  the sacraments, the gifts and fruits of the Holy Spirit, and so much more...all this that I might attain what God had planned for me for all eternity.
   That was as far as I read during retreat but now that I have finished the book  I have learned more and more about Jesus Christ, an indepth expose of the sacraments, and the four last things. I recommend this book to beginners and to so called experts in the spiritual life.

Saint of the Week
- http://www.americancatholic.org/features/saints/saint.aspx?id=1447

- St. Francis Solano (1549-1610): July 14

   Francis came from a leading family in Andalusia, Spain. Perhaps it was his popularity as a student that enabled Francis in his teens to stop two duelists. He entered the Friars Minor in 1570, and after ordination enthusiastically sacrificed himself for others. His care for the sick during an epidemic drew so much admiration that he became embarrassed and asked to be sent to the African missions. Instead he was sent to South America in 1589.
   While working in what is now Argentina, Bolivia and Paraguay, Francis quickly learned the local languages and was well received by the indigenous peoples. His visits to the sick often included playing a song on his violin.
   Around 1601 he was called to Lima, Peru, where he tried to recall the Spanish colonists to their baptismal integrity. Francis also worked to defend the indigenous peoples from oppression. He died in Lima and was canonized in 1726.
