Message of the Day
It is chiefly by asking questions and in provoking explanations that the master must open the mind of the pupil, make him work, and use his thinking powers, form his judgement, and make him find out for himself the answer."
- Jean Baptiste de La Salle -
(What kinds of questions are calling you to growth at this time? How might they be the work of the Master?)

2 Pt 1:2-7; Ps 91:1-2, 14-16; Mk 12:1-12
R. (see 2b) In you, my God, I place my trust.
You who dwell in the shelter of the Most High,
who abide in the shadow of the Almighty,
Say to the LORD, "My refuge and my fortress,
my God, in whom I trust."
Because he clings to me, I will deliver him;
I will set him on high because he acknowledges my name.
He shall call upon me, and I will answer him;
I will be with him in distress.
I will deliver him and glorify him;
with length of days I will gratify him
and will show him my salvation.

Reflection on the Gospel
- from Daily Bread

So they seized him and killed him and threw him out of the vineyard.
We may not be familiar with vineyards, but Jesus’ audience certainly was. They would immediately make a connection between this parable and the vineyard in Isaiah 5, a vineyard destroyed because it produced only wild grapes. Those listening would understand that Israel was the vineyard and God was the landowner. Jesus’ message is clear: If the original tenant farmers do not produce the fruits of the kingdom, the vineyard will be taken away from them and given to others. Likewise, Jesus calls us to bear the fruit of the kingdom.
Guide us, loving God, that we might bear good fruit.

Spiritual Reading
The Adornment of the Spiritual Marriage
by St. John of Rusybroeck (1293-1381)
You know that every meeting is a coming together of two persons, who come from different places, which are separated from, and opposite to, each other. Now Christ comes from above as a Lord and generous Giver, who can do all things. And we come from below as the poor servants, who can do nothing of ourselves, but have need of everything. The coming of Christ to us is from within outwards, and we go towards Him from without inwards; and this is why a ghostly meeting must here take place. And this coming and this meeting of ourselves and Christ takes place in two ways, to wit, with means and without means.
- Chapter 56: Showing the way in which we shall meet God in a ghostly manner both with and without means.
