R. (13) I will take the cup of salvation, and call on the name of the Lord.

How shall I make a return to the LORD
for all the good he has done for me?
The cup of salvation I will take up,
and I will call upon the name of the LORD.

Precious in the eyes of the LORD
is the death of his faithful ones.
I am your servant, the son of your handmaid;
you have loosed my bonds.

To you will I offer sacrifice of thanksgiving,
and I will call upon the name of the LORD.
My vows to the LORD I will pay
in the presence of all his people.

Theology Note of the Week

- Omnipotence

Omnipotence is an attribute of God alone. It is the quality of having all power (Psalm 115:3). He can do all things that do not conflict with his holy nature. God has the power to do anything he wants to do.  However, God cannot do that which is contrary to his nature.  For example, God cannot lie (Titus 1:2).

Featured Spiritual Growth Resources

Discerning God's Will, by Philip St. Romain. Contemplative Ministries, Inc. 2012.

Anyone seeking to grow spiritually would do well to learn more about discernment. One can obtain lofty degrees in biblical studies or theology, but such do not necessarily help one to live in God’s will. Indeed, the phrase, “God’s will,” holds lots of baggage for many, especially those who have suffered religious abuse. Nevertheless, we cannot dispense of the topic as it is central to any theistic approach to spirituality such as we find in Judaism, Christianity and Islam. These religions affirm that not only is there a God or Creator, but that God’s nature is personal and relational. It follows that God created each of us to do some kind of work on this planet during our brief sojourn. Finding out what that work might be is the concern of discernment.  (From the Introduction)

Book (movie, CD) of the Week

Seed and Growth: The Story of the Dominican Sisters of Mission San Jose (CA), by Sister Mary Thomas Lillis OP.  Published by the Dominicans of Mission San Jose. 2012.

This is a 660 page history of the foundation and story of the Dominicans of Mission San Jose from their beginning in 1876, until the present. Most of the story was written by Sister Mary Thomas Lillis but was completed by other Sisters. Their community took the brave step across the continent from Brooklyn, New York to faraway California, led by Mother Pia Backes who remained in charge for many decades.
As most histories of religious foundations record, there was for these pioneers also the tale: “Sisters arrived after being promised a home and a school; neither existed when the day of arrival came.” These Sisters had to deal with lack of facilities, overcrowded buildings, dirt and filth, too many children for a teacher, lack of communication, irregular correspondence and problems in communicating with the Motherhouse, and the never ending requests for Sisters to start new schools. These Dominicans were intent on helping the poor, catechizing the uneducated in the faith, and caring for orphans, even as they dealt with bishops and clergy who were sometimes unreasonable.
They were not afraid to move into Mexico when terror appeared on every corner; they changed to secular clothing to do ministry undetected; they abandoned their convents when necessary and regrouped when it was safe. They founded many schools and orphanages in California and in Oregon, and opened a Motherhouse in Bavaria to serve as a “feeder” for their California mission.
One chapter is devoted to the story of Mother Antonina Fischer, foundress of the Great Bend, Kansas community. Mission San Jose offered her a home after she left Great Bend under unhappy circumstances. Mother Antonina died and was buried in the California cemetery, but her body was returned to Great Bend when the Great Bend  Sisters marked their fiftieth anniversary in 1952. Mother Pia and Mother Antonina had been lifelong friends, as well as daring missionaries.

Saint of the Week
- http://www.americancatholic.org/features/saints/saint.aspx?id=1414

- St. Albert Chmielowski (1845-1916): June 17

Born in Igolomia near Kraków as the eldest of four children in a wealthy family, he was christened Adam. During the 1864 revolt against Czar Alexander III, Adam’s wounds forced the amputation of his left leg.
His great talent for painting led to studies in Warsaw, Munich and Paris. Adam returned to Kraków and became a Secular Franciscan. In 1888 he took the name Albert when he founded the Brothers of the Third Order of Saint Francis, Servants to the Poor. They worked primarily with the homeless, depending completely on alms while serving the needy, regardless of age, religion or politics. A community of Albertine sisters was established later.
Pope John Paul II beatified him in 1983 and canonized him six years later.

Joke of the Week

The confession...

Henry goes to confession and says, "Bless me Father, for I have sinned. Last night I was with seven different women."
The priest says, "Take seven lemons, squeeze them into a glass and drink the juice without pausing."
"Will that cleanse me of my sins, Father?"
"No," replies the priest. "But it'll wipe that silly grin off your face."
