Weekend Readings
http://new.usccb.org/calendar/index.cfm?showLit=1&action=month
Saturday:
Rom 16:3-9, 16, 22-27; Ps 145:2-3, 4-5,
10-11; Lk 16:9-15
Sunday:
Wis 6:12-16; Ps 63:2, 3-4, 5-6,
7-8; 1 Thes 4:13-18; Mt 25:1-13
R. (2b) My soul is thirsting
for you, O Lord my God.
O God, you are my God whom I seek;
for you my flesh pines and my soul thirsts
like the earth, parched, lifeless and without water.
Thus have I gazed toward you in the sanctuary
to see your power and your glory,
For your kindness is a greater good than life;
my lips shall glorify you.
Thus will I bless you while I live;
lifting up my hands, I will call upon your name.
As with the riches of a banquet shall my soul be satisfied,
and with exultant lips my mouth shall praise you.
I will remember you upon my couch,
and through the night-watches I will meditate on you:
You are my help,
and in the shadow of your wings I shout for joy.

Book of the Week
The Other Side of Chaos:
Breaking Through When Life is Breaking Down, by
Margaret Silf. Loyola Press, 2009.
What possibly can chaos bring into the life
of a Christian that can be considered GOOD? Silf explores this through
Scripture, stories, verses, personal accounts, and stories in
abundance. She believes that chaos can help one develop an authentic
spirituality that will lead to a productive life, one that is creative
and even pleasant. She wants her book to give readers the courage to
trust God when life is breaking down and to see messes not as something
to be rescued from, but as something that will help break through to a
place where God makes all things new.
Some of her exciting chapter headings are: Crises:
Danger or Opportunity; God Bless This Mess; The Fly on the Face
of the Mona Lisa; Will You Save Your Life or Spend it?; Can Bad News Be
Good News?; Yesterday is already Yours; The Day the Rains Came; When
Bad Seeds Yield Good Fruit; When the Traveler is Ready, the Bridge
Appears.
Each chapter is loaded with reflective questions on
how this fits into one's life. For example: How would you
describe your own chaos? What practical wisdom would you offer in such
a case? How does your inner chaos feel right now? Have some small
incidents taken the wind out of your sails? Have you taken risks in
this area and what were the results?
"The journey through change to transformation is a journey
for the mature soul. And the mature soul knows that there is no way of
making this journey under his or her own steam. The staff is there to
remind us that we need something---Someone--- to lean on." "As
you go, you will meet with situations that take you closer to God who
dreams within you and to the heart of what it means to be human. Stay
with those situations and lend them your energy." "Walk on in
courage and in hope... and one day, when you least expect it, you will
wake to find yourself on the other side of chaos.'

Saint of the Week
- http://www.americancatholic.org/features/saints/saint.aspx?id=1192
- St. Didacus: (1400-1463):
November 7
Didacus is living
proof that God "chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise;
God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong" (1 Corinthians
1:27).
As a young man in Spain, Didacus joined the Secular
Franciscan Order and lived for some time as a hermit. After Didacus
became a Franciscan brother, he developed a reputation for great
insight into God's ways. His penances were heroic. He was so generous
with the poor that the friars sometimes grew uneasy about his charity.
Didacus volunteered for the missions in the Canary
Islands and labored there energetically and profitably. He was also the
superior of a friary there.
In 1450 he was sent to Rome to attend the canonization of
St. Bernardine of Siena. When many friars gathered for that celebration
fell sick, Didacus stayed in Rome for three months to nurse them. After
he returned to Spain, he pursued a life of contemplation full-time. He
showed the friars the wisdom of God's ways.
As he was dying, Didacus looked at a crucifix and said: "O
faithful wood, O precious nails! You have borne an exceedingly sweet
burden, for you have been judged worthy to bear the Lord and King of
heaven" (Marion A. Habig, O.F.M., The Franciscan Book of Saints, p.
834).
San Diego, California, is named for this Franciscan, who
was canonized in 1588.
