Message of the Day

Christ is like a river. A river is continually flowing, there are fresh supplies of water coming from the fountain-head continually so that man may live by it, and be supplied with water all his life. So Christ is an ever-flowing fountain; he is continually supplying his people, and the fountain is not spent. They who live upon Christ, may have fresh supplies from him to all eternity; they may have an increase of blessedness that is new, and new still, and which never will come to an end.

Lectionary Readings of the Day
   http://www.usccb.org/calendar/index.cfm?showLit=1&action=month

Rom 6:19-23;    Ps 1:1-2, 3, 4 and 6;    Lk 12:49-53

R. (Ps 40:5) Blessed are they who hope in the Lord.

Blessed the one who follows not
the counsel of the wicked
Nor walks in the way of sinners,
nor sits in the company of the insolent,
But delights in the law of the LORD
and meditates on his law day and night.

He is like a tree
planted near running water,
That yields its fruit in due season,
and whose leaves never fade.
Whatever he does, prospers.

Not so the wicked, not so;
they are like chaff which the wind drives away.
For the LORD watches over the way of the just,
but the way of the wicked vanishes.

Reflection on the Gospel
  - from Daily Bread
    http://www.preacherexchange.com/daily_bread.htm

Do you think I have come to establish peace on the earth?

Well, yes, actually I do think Jesus came to establish peace.  He's the Prince of Peace, right? In the morning office we sing in the Song of Zechariah that he was sent to guide our feet on the way to peace. So what does this disturbing text mean? Perhaps that there is nothing "soft" about the Gospel.  Perhaps that the peace Jesus brings is not the status quo. Perhaps that to believe with our whole heart and to act on that belief will sometimes yield division within families, even division within our self. But note: These verses are not a justification for such division.

Lord Jesus, give us the grace of sincerity and steadfastness and, if it be your will, peace.

Spiritual Reading
    - Imitation of Christ, by Thomas A. Kempis

The Disciple

To me it would be happiness, indeed, to shed tears in Your presence from the innermost depths of love, and like the pious Magdalen to wash Your feet with them. But where now is this devotion, this copious shedding of holy tears? Certainly in Your sight, before Your holy angels, my whole heart ought to be inflamed and weep for joy. For, hidden though You are beneath another form, I have You truly present in the Sacrament.
