Message of the Day
God desires and is pleased to communicate with us through the avenues of our minds, our wills, and our emotions. The continuous and unembarrassed interchange of love and thought between God and the souls of the redeemed men and women is the throbbing heart of the New Testament.

Lectionary Readings of the Day
http://www.usccb.org/calendar/index.cfm?showLit=1&action=month
Hg 1:1-8; Ps 149:1b-2, 3-4, 5-6a and 9b; Lk 9:7-9
R. (see 4a) The Lord takes delight in his people.
Sing to the LORD a new song
of praise in the assembly of the faithful.
Let Israel be glad in their maker,
let the children of Zion rejoice in their king.
Let them praise his name in the festive dance,
let them sing praise to him with timbrel and harp.
For the LORD loves his people,
and he adorns the lowly with victory.
Let the faithful exult in glory;
let them sing for joy upon their couches;
Let the high praises of God be in their throats.
This is the glory of all his faithful. Alleluia.

Reflection on the Gospel
- from Daily Bread

Who then is this about whom I hear such things?
Even though we know Jesus well, we can appreciate Herod's fascination and frustration. For who could fathom such a person as Jesus: one who is God himself and yet one of us? One who rightly bears so many titles: Messiah, Son of God, Teacher, Healer, Friend, Lord of Lords, King of Kings, Prince of Peace ...? How blessed we are to know Jesus in so many ways: to receive his body and blood in the Eucharist, to be filled with his Holy Spirit, to know him in the community of believers -- in the ones who come to us in our need, in the ones he gives us to serve.
For deepening love and gratitude for our relationship with Jesus, we pray.

Spiritual Reading
- Imitation of Christ, by Thomas A. Kempis
The Voice of Christ
If, now and then, on abstains (from Communion) by the grace of humility or for a legitimate reason, his reverence is commendable, but if laziness takes hold of him, he must arouse himself and do everything in his power, for the Lord will quicken his desire because of the good intention to which He particularly looks. When he is indeed unable to come, he will always have the good will and pious intention to communicate and thus he will not lose the fruit of the Sacrament.
