God is with us.
What are you most afraid of? Death? Pain? The loss of a dear someone? Yes, of course. But even more so, people are afraid of happenstance, randomness, the unbearable notion that there is no plan and no purpose. Today's feast responds to that fear. Events that appear to be chance or coincidence or even sinful work together to create goodness. A most ordinary, unlikely person becomes the Christ-bearer. And we, who are also unlikely, also ordinary -- we too are called to be Christ-bearers, not through our own efforts or virtue, but because God works mysteriously in us.
Holy Mary, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death.
