Message of the Day
Consider Jesus. Know Jesus. Learn what kind of Person it is you say you trust and love and worship. Soak in the shadow of Jesus. Saturate your soul with the ways of Jesus. Watch Him. Listen to Him. Stand in awe of Him. Let Him overwhelm you with the way He is.
- John Piper

Lectionary Readings of the Day
http://new.usccb.org/calendar/index.cfm?showLit=1&action=month
1 Thes 4:13-18; Ps 96:1 and 3, 4-5, 11-12, 13; Mk 6:17-29
R. (13b) The Lord comes to judge the earth.
Sing to the LORD a new song;
sing to the LORD, all you lands.
Tell his glory among the nations;
among all peoples, his wondrous deeds.
For great is the LORD and highly to be praised;
awesome is he, beyond all gods.
For all the gods of the nations are things of nought,
but the LORD made the heavens.
Let the heavens be glad and the earth rejoice;
let the sea and what fills it resound;
let the plains be joyful and all that is in them!
Then shall all the trees of the forest exult.
Before the LORD, for he comes;
for he comes to rule the earth.
He shall rule the world with justice
and the peoples with his constancy.

Reflection on the Gospel
- from Daily Bread
http://www.preacherexchange.com/daily_bread.htm
I want you to give me at once on a platter the head of John the Baptist.
In today's disturbing story of the collusion of evil forces, Herod's decadence, arrogance and oath-making open the door for Herodias to act on her resentment. She carries out her vile intent through her daughter, whose readiness to comply with the brutal plan indicates her lack of moral compunction. She has clearly been trained in her mother's evil ways. Let us never be naive about the reality of evil. First we must rout it out of our own hearts, and then we must steer clear of the world's wickedness, admonishing others whenever we see them tempted by sin.
For grace that conquers evil, we pray.

Spiritual Reading
The Adornment of the Spiritual Marriage
by St. John of Rusybroeck (1293-1381)
Christ the glorious Sun sparkled and shone higher still, and brighter, and more ardently; for all the days of His life long His bodily powers and His senses, His heart and His mind, were called and destined of His Father to that most high glory and beatitude which He now enjoys, according to His senses and His bodily powers. And He Himself was both naturally and supernaturally inclined thereto, according to His affections; nevertheless He was willing to abide in this exile until the time that His Father had foreseen and ordained from eternity. Thus He possessed the third degree.
- Chapter 33: Showing how these four degrees of perfection are found in Christ.
