Living," by Philip St. Romain

This book invites us to take a journey deep into the soul,
where the mystery of self and the mystery of God are so intertwined
as to seem one life. It is a treasure trove of versatile,
uplifting, intuitive meditations, proverbs, exhortations,
reflections and exploratory questions on such topics as Empty
Lovingness, True Prayer, and Sanity. St. Romain urges us to "be
here now in love" that we might know greater peace and joy in daily

THEOLOGY NOTE OF THE WEEK
- Magic
Magic is of different types. Magic tricks meant for entertainment
is not occultic. But black magic and white magic are. The latter
types of magic are attempts to control people and/or the
environment by such means as divinination, spells, incantations,
etc. It is aimed at controlling supernatural forces to bring a
desired result.
Magic was commonly practiced in ancient times because people were
desirous of safety and regularity. So, they would turn to magical
practices in order to influence the weather, learn about enemies,
and have good food production.
Magic is a form of sorcery and is always condemned by scripture.

SAINT OF THE WEEK
- St. Joan of the Cross (1666-1736): August 17
An encounter with a shabby old woman many dismissed as insane
prompted St. Joan to dedicate her life to the poor. For Joan, who
had a reputation as a businesswoman intent on monetary success,
this was a significant conversion.
Born in 1666 in Anjou, France, Joan worked in the family business--a
small shop near a religious shrine--from an early age. After her
parents' death she took over the shop herself. She quickly became
known for her greediness and insensitivity to the beggars who often
came seeking help.
That was until she was touched by the strange woman who claimed she
was on intimate terms with the deity. Joan, who had always been
devout, even scrupulous, became a new person. She began caring for
needy children. Then the poor, elderly and sick came to her. Over
time she closed the family business so she could devote herself
fully to good works and penance.
She went on to found what came to be known as the Congregation of
St. Anne of Providence. It was then she took the religious name of
Joan of the Cross. By the time of her death in 1736 she had founded
12 religious houses, hospices and schools. Pope John Paul II
canonized her in 1982.

BOOK OF THE WEEK
"In the Midst of Winter," by Louise Hageman OP. Dimension Books,
1977.
The author of this book on suffering lost her two-year battle to
cancer on July 25, 2011. She has written so well on the meaning of
suffering, beginning with the loss of her mother when she (then
Rita Hageman) was just a little girl.
Sister Louise, as she was known as a Dominican Sister of Great
Gend, KS, suggests suffering is a source of inwardness and can
become creative. She writes that some may use various techniques
to escape suffering, all to no avail.
The author says that a person can give authentic responses to
siffring if one recognizes it as a warning, a condtion for
refinement and depth, a means of communion with others, and a way
to purification. She notes that suffering can have a positive
value and can incarnate God in this world.
Of special interest is her approach tho the loss of loves ones.
"We had no right to share another person's life," she says. The
relationship is pure give and deserving of the gratitude to God.
"We can rejoice in the times we roamed the hills, admired the
shimmer on the lake, prayed together in the quiet of the evening,
and silently touched and knew the oneness of our persons."
(Thanks to Sr. Irene Hartman OP for this review.)

WEB SITE OF THE WEEK
Apophatic or Kataphatic Prayer?
A very good article explaining the distinctions between these two
superhighways of prayer methods and experiences. The author uses
"The Cloud of Unknowing" and the Spiritual exercises of St.
Ignatius as representatives of the apophatic and kataphatic
traditions, respectively.

JOKE OF THE WEEK
- School days . . .
Mom was trying to get her son to get out of bed and get ready for
school. "I am not going to school!" the son responded defiantly.
"Why not?" Mom wanted to know.
"Well, first of all I hate school and second of all ..the kid all
hate me!!" was the answer.
"Son, that's not good reasons..you will have to get up and ready
for school!" Mom replied.
"Well, give me two good reasons why I should," the son said.
"Well," Mom said quietly, "First of all you are 52 years old and
second of all...You are the Principal."
