WEEKEND READINGS
http://www.nccbuscc.org/nab/

Saturday: Ex 24:3-8; Ps. 50:1b-2, 5-6, 14-15; Mt 13:24-30
Sunday: 1 Kgs 3:5, 7-12; Ps. 119:57, 72, 76-77, 127-128,
129-130; Rom 8:28-30

R. (97a) Lord, I love your commands.

I have said, O LORD, that my part
is to keep your words.
The law of your mouth is to me more precious
than thousands of gold and silver pieces.

Let your kindness comfort me
according to your promise to your servants.
Let your compassion come to me that I may live,
for your law is my delight.

For I love your command
more than gold, however fine.
For in all your precepts I go forward;
every false way I hate.

Wonderful are your decrees;
therefore I observe them.
The revelation of your words sheds light,
giving understanding to the simple.

THEOLOGY NOTE OF THE WEEK

- Limited Atonement

The teaching held in Reformed (Calvinist) circles of Christianity
that Jesus bore only the sins of the elect, and not that of every
individual who ever lived. It sees "the world" as all nations. It
maintains that the sacrifice was sufficient for all, but intended
for the elect.

SAINT OF THE WEEK

- St. Martha: July 29

Martha, Mary and their brother Lazarus were evidently close friends
of Jesus. He came to their home simply as a welcomed guest, rather
than as one celebrating the conversion of a sinner like Zacchaeus
or one unceremoniously received by a suspicious Pharisee. The
sisters feel free to call on Jesus at their brother's death, even
though a return to Judea at that time seems almost certain death.

No doubt Martha was an active sort of person. On one occasion (see
Luke 10:38-42) she prepares the meal for Jesus and possibly his
fellow guests and forthrightly states the obvious: All hands should
pitch in to help with the dinner.

Yet, as biblical scholar Father John McKenzie points out, she need
not be rated as an "unrecollected activist." The evangelist is
emphasizing what our Lord said on several occasions about the
primacy of the spiritual: "...[D]o not worry about your life, what
you will eat [or drink], or about your body, what you will wear....
But seek first the kingdom [of God] and his righteousness" (Matthew
6:25b, 33a); "One does not live by bread alone" (Luke 4:4b);
"Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for righteousness..."
(Matthew 5:6a).

Martha's great glory is her simple and strong statement of faith in
Jesus after her brother's death. "Jesus told her, 'I am the
resurrection and the life; whoever believes in me, even if he dies,
will live, and everyone who lives and believes in me will never
die. Do you believe this?' She said to him, 'Yes, Lord. I have come
to believe that you are the Messiah, the Son of God, the one who is
coming into the world'" (John 11:25-27).

BOOK OF THE WEEK

"Becoming Bread: Embracing the Spiritual in the Everyday," by
Gunilla Norris. Hidden Spring, 1993.
-
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/1587680238/ref=noism/christianspiritu/

What a beautiful meditation for one who loves to bake bread!!! The
author goes through each step in the process of making bread and
makes each step a source of reflection and soul searching. This
book leaves one with a sense of the divine found in the simple
bread making process.

Choose a time to be alone. Turn off the radio. Take the phone off
the hook. Go prayerfully into your kitchen. Decide that you are
going to make bread today because the world is hungry, or because a
friend needs a loaf. Select the ingredients and utensils you need.
Notice the mixing bowl , the baking pans, and the cups are open,
not closed. Is your attitude open to whatever God has in store for
you? You are about to become engaged in a process. Is love your
motivation? Are you baking because you love to bake or because you
have to? Can you make this process a love affair?

Notice the blessings of each ingredient. Flour from wheat that went
through many months in fields, and time in the mill to make it into
flour, all in preparation for this event in your kitchen. Salt from
the earth...gift of God. Water, so necessary for life. Yeast, that
which will give the dough ability to rise and become airy.
Measuring spoons, to get the right amount of salt and yeast. The
oven with just the right temperature.

And then there is the physical activity, the mixing, the kneading,
the shaping of loaves. There is the waiting time, the time to let
the dough rise twice or three times. This is a time of reflection
and gratitude for the blessings of the morning. Wait, wait
patiently, until you begin to smell the wondrous aroma of bread
baking. Ease the new loaves from the pans, bring on the butter or
jam, and have yourself a feast! Call to mind the last Eucharist you
shared. And thank your God for the gift of home baked bread!

JOKE OF THE WEEK

- What causes people to have arthritis?

A man who smelled like a distillery flopped on a subway seat next
to a priest. The man's tie was stained, his face was plastered with
red lipstick, and a half empty bottle of gin was sticking out of
his torn coat pocket. He opened his newspaper and began reading.
After a few minutes, the disheveled guy turned to the priest and
asked, "Say, father, what causes arthritis?"

"Mister, it's caused by loose living, being with cheap, wicked
women, too much alcohol and a contempt for your fellow man."

"Well I'll be." the drunk muttered, returning to his paper.

The priest, thinking about what he had said, nudged the man and
apologized. "I'm very sorry. I didn't mean to come on so strong.
How long did you have arthritis?"

"I don't have it father. I was just reading here that the Pope
does."

- Thanks, Carol.
