R. (5a) Lord, you are good and forgiving.

You, O LORD, are good and forgiving,
abounding in kindness to all who call upon you.
Hearken, O LORD, to my prayer
and attend to the sound of my pleading.

All the nations you have made shall come
and worship you, O LORD,
and glorify your name.
For you are great, and you do wondrous deeds;
you alone are God.

You, O LORD, are a God merciful and gracious,

Turn toward me, and have pity on me;
give your strength to your servant.

THEOLOGY NOTE OF THE WEEK

- Liberalism

In Christianity, the movement away from traditional orthodoxy often
in an attempt to harmonize biblical teachings with science,
humanism, or other secular fields. The result is often a denial of
essential biblical doctrines such as the Trinity, the deity of
Christ, His virgin birth, His resurrection, and salvation by grace.

SAINT OF THE WEEK

- St. Lawrence of Brindisi: (1559-1619) July 21

At first glance perhaps the most remarkable quality of Lawrence of
Brindisi is his outstanding gift of languages. In addition to a
thorough knowledge of his native Italian, he had complete reading
and speaking ability in Latin, Hebrew, Greek, German, Bohemian,
Spanish and French.

He was born on July 22, 1559, and died exactly 60 years later on
his birthday in 1619. His parents William and Elizabeth Russo gave
him the name of Julius Caesar, Caesare in Italian. After the early
death of his parents, he was educated by his uncle at the College
of St. Mark in Venice.

When he was just 16 he entered the Capuchin Franciscan Order in
Venice and received the name of Lawrence. He completed his studies
of philosophy and theology at the University of Padua and was
ordained a priest at 23.

With his facility for languages he was able to study the Bible in
its original texts. At the request of Pope Clement VIII, he spent
much time preaching to the Jews in Italy. So excellent was his
knowledge of Hebrew, the rabbis felt sure he was a Jew who had
become a Christian.

In 1956 the Capuchins completed a 15-volume edition of his
writings. Eleven of these 15 contain his sermons, each of which
relies chiefly on scriptural quotations to illustrate his teaching.

Lawrence's sensitivity to the needs of people--a character trait
perhaps unexpected in such a talented scholar--began to surface. He
was elected major superior of the Capuchin Franciscan province of
Tuscany at the age of 31. He had the combination of brilliance,
human compassion and administrative skill needed to carry out his
duties. In rapid succession he was promoted by his fellow Capuchins
and was elected minister general of the Capuchins in 1602. In this
position he was responsible for great growth and geographical
expansion of the Order.

Lawrence was appointed papal emissary and peacemaker, a job which
took him to a number of foreign countries. An effort to achieve
peace in his native kingdom of Naples took him on a journey to
Lisbon to visit the king of Spain. Serious illness in Lisbon took
his life in 1619.

BOOK OF THE WEEK

"My Other Self: Conversations with Christ on living your faith," by
Clarence J. Enzler. Christian Classics, 2010.
-
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0870612484/ref=noism/christianspiritu/

Readers may well think they are reading a revised copy of "The
Imitation of Chris"t when beginning this book by Enzler, and indeed
it is based on that spiritual treasure popular for many decades. It
is written in the first person with Christ as the speaker, and
directed to YOU. Christ leads the reader through the spiritual
life, beginning with the call to live in friendship with Him.
Readers will find that this book is written from the heart and has
the power to touch the heart. Readers are encouraged to read this
book slowly, perhaps a short chapter each day.

Readers will find that Christ is presented as a very human person
in love with all of creation. The eternal NOW of Christ is sure to
make one know the true path to holiness, a path that is presented
as an intimate, real, and desirable path, is open to all peoples.
The various prayers led by Christ can make one aware of a being
engaged in a personal conversation with Him as the Beloved.

This book is deeply biblical and rooted in the tradition of the
Church. It is a practical guide for Christians living in the
contemporary world and seeking a closer relationship with Christ.
Readers will find penetrating insights, uncompromising challenges,
and gentle encouragement in seeking a new and exciting path to the
Divine. One may find both devotion and faith in the book's pages
and hopes for a change of heart.

"Your work, my dear friend, is to paint a portrait... My Father has
given you the canvas, brushes, paints, a room to work in, a Subject
to produce. The canvas is your life; the brushes are your thoughts,
words, and deeds; the paints are the inspirations, temptations,
trials, and joys you encounter; the room is your vocation in life,
and I am the Subject. Fashion your life so that when My Father
looks on you he will see my image."

JOKE OF THE WEEK

- Pro and Con

If pro- is the opposite of con- then congress must be the opposite
of progress.

- - -

- Buy a grade?

A professor was giving a big test one day to his students. He
handed out all of the tests and went back to his desk to wait.

Once the test was over the students all handed the tests back in.
The professor noticed that one of the students had attached a $100
bill to his test with a note saying "A dollar per point."

The next class the professor handed the tests back out. This
student got back his test and $64 change.
