WEEKEND READINGS
http://www.nccbuscc.org/nab/

Saturday: Gn 49:29-32; 50:15-26; Ps. 105:1-2, 3-4, 6-7; Mt
10:24-33
Sunday: Is 55:10-11; Ps. 65:10, 11, 12-13, 14; Rom 8:18-23;
Mt 13:1-23

R. (Lk 8:8) The seed that falls on good ground will yield a
fruitful harvest.

You have visited the land and watered it;
greatly have you enriched it.
God's watercourses are filled;
you have prepared the grain.

Thus have you prepared the land: drenching its furrows,
breaking up its clods,
Softening it with showers,
blessing its yield.

You have crowned the year with your bounty,
and your paths overflow with a rich harvest;
The untilled meadows overflow with it,
and rejoicing clothes the hills.

The fields are garmented with flocks
and the valleys blanketed with grain.
They shout and sing for joy.

THEOLOGY NOTE OF THE WEEK

- Laying on of hands

Physical contact by touching of the hands. In the OT and NT it was
sometimes used in reference to doing physical harm (Gen. 22:12;
Luke 20:19). In the NT it is also used to signify an attempt at
healing (Acts 9:12) and commissioning of Holy Work (1 Tim. 4:14).
Usually, during the ordination of an elder, hands are laid on him
as symbol of a transfer of authority and power.

SAINT OF THE WEEK

- St. Bonaventure (1221-1274): July 15

Bonaventure, Franciscan, theologian, doctor of the Church, was both
learned and holy. Because of the spirit that filled him and his
writings, he was at first called the Devout Doctor; but in more
recent centuries he has been known as the Seraphic Doctor after the
"Seraphic Father" Francis because of the truly Franciscan spirit he
possessed.

Born in Bagnoregio, a town in central Italy, he was cured of a
serious illness as a boy through the prayers of Francis of Assisi.
Later, he studied the liberal arts in Paris. Inspired by Francis
and the example of the friars, especially of his master in
theology, Alexander of Hales, he entered the Franciscan Order, and
became in turn a teacher of theology in the university. Chosen as
minister general of the Order in 1257, he was God's instrument in
bringing it back to a deeper love of the way of St. Francis, both
through the life of Francis which he wrote at the behest of the
brothers and through other works which defended the Order or
explained its ideals and way of life.

BOOK OF THE WEEK

"The Light," by Massima Scaligero. Lindsfarne Books, 2001.
-
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0970109768/ref=noism/christianspiritu/

This book is called an introduction to the creative imagination.

Light is something we cannot see, but which helps us see other
things. Humans and animals ordinarily cannot see in the dark, but
some animals see best in the dark. Science has made types of lights
that enable persons to penetrate the darkness.

Humans in general cannot penetrate darkness. The darkness one sees
before one is a symbol of the darkness of the soul. But the light
with which we can behold in the darkness rises to us from the
soul's depths. This makes darkness sometimes the object of
contemplation and of silence. Contemplation most always proceeds
through darkness.

The power of the sun's original light shines into the world and
illumines the human soul as thinking. The author insists on the
importance of "SEEING"and of recognizing the source of all being,
knowing, and love. He offers a challenge to the readers: Will we
learn to experience the process of consciousness or will we rest in
their product?

JOKE OF THE WEEK

- Not a tear-jerker: promise!

A young man shopping in a supermarket noticed a little old lady
following him around. If he stopped, she stopped. Furthermore she
kept staring at him.

She finally overtook him at the checkout, and she turned to him and
said, "I hope I haven't made you feel ill at ease; it's just that
you look so much like my late son."

He answered, "That's okay."

"I know it's silly, but if you'd call out 'Good bye, Mom' as I
leave the store, it would make me feel so happy."

She then went through the checkout, and as she was on her way out
of the store, the man called out, "Goodbye, Mom."

The little old lady waved and smiled back at him.

Pleased that he had brought a little sunshine into someone's day,
he went to pay for his groceries.

"That comes to $121.85," said the clerk.

"How come so much? I only bought 5 items."

The clerk replied, "Yeah, but your Mother said you'd be paying for
her things, too."

(See? Not a tear-jerker!)
