relationship with one another and with God. Topics covered include
communication skills, spirituality, understanding personality

finances and raising children. Couples can read this book together,
or separately, then pause, discuss, and pray together. Wherever you
are in your marriage (or if you and your partner are planning to
marry), this rare blend of faith-building spiritual counsel and
problem-solving practical advice is an aid to finding (or keeping)
that close bond you have always wanted with your spouse.

SAINT OF THE WEEK
- St. Joseph Cafasso (1811-1860): June 23
Even as a young man, Joseph loved to attend Mass and was known for
his humility and fervor in prayer. After his ordination he was
assigned to a seminary in Turin. There he worked especially against
the spirit of Jansenism, an excessive preoccupation with sin and
damnation. Joseph used the works of St. Francis de Sales and St.
Alphonsus Liguori to moderate the rigorism popular at the seminary.
Joseph recommended membership in the Secular Franciscan Order to
priests. He urged devotion to the Blessed Sacrament and encouraged
daily Communion. In addition to his teaching duties, Joseph was an
excellent preacher, confessor and retreat master. Noted for his
work with condemned prisoners, Joseph helped many of them die at
peace with God.
St. John Bosco was one of Joseph's pupils. Joseph urged John Bosco
to establish the Salesians to work with the youth of Turin. Joseph
was canonized in 1947.

BOOK OF THE WEEK
"A Lever and a Place to Stand: the contemplative stance, the active
prayer," by Richard Rohr. Hidden Spring. 2011,
-
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/1587680645/ref=noism/christianspiritu/
Richard Rohr in his usual manner of involving his readers presents
" a critique of religious attitudes that create an alternative
pious world for their believers without challenging the oppression,
materialism, and sectarianism of our modern world." From the
beginning of this book, he insists that the lack of a contemplative
stance is at the root of the problem. He says that religion can
only recover its purpose to transform if it overcomes the
temptation to embrace power, certitude, wealth, and fundamentalism.
This recovery can only take place if one seriously embraces the
messages of the Gospel.
The author insists that action and contemplation are the greatest
art form. When these two are one, he says, there will always be
beauty, symmetry, and transformation in one's life. Rohr tells his
readers that to have contemplation, one has to have a slight
distance from the world, time for withdrawal from business as
usual, take time for meditation, for prayer in one's private room,
as Jesus names it. In an almost contradictory mood, Rohr tells his
readers that in order to avoid escapism, one must remain close to
the world, its pains, and its joys; these must become one's own
pains and joys.
"God offers us quiet contemplative eyes, but God also calls us to
prophetic and critical involvement in the pain and sufferings of
our world---at the same time. This is so obvious in the life and
ministry of Jesus that one wonders why it would even be questioned."

JOKE OF THE WEEK
- Another golfing joke
Three gentlemen are golfing one sunny day. They come to a difficult
par with a water trap just after the tee. The first golfer proceeds
to hit his ball right into the water. To retrieve it, he simply
approaches the body of water and extends his golf club. The water
parts, he takes his next shot and it lands on the green. The second
golfer hits his ball towards the water, but rather than sink, the
ball floats on top of the water. The golfer nonchalantly walks
across the water and hits the ball onto the green.
The third golfer hits his the ball directly into the water, where
it quickly starts to sink. As the ball sinks, a fish grabs the ball
in its mouth. At that very moment, a hawk plucks the fish out of
the water and begins to carry it aloft. As the bird soars higher, a
bolt of lightning startles the bird, which then drops the fish into
a nearby tree. When the fish hits a branch of the tree, the ball
pops out, rolls down the trunk of the tree, across the green and
right into the hole...
Moses turns to Jesus and says "You know, I hate golfing with your
Father."
