THEOLOGY NOTE OF THE WEEK
- Law of non-contradiction
The Law of non-contradiction is the law that something cannot be
both true and not true at the same time when dealing with the same
context. For example, the chair in my living room, right now,
cannot be made of wood and not made of wood at the same time. In
the law of non-contradiction, where we have a set of statements
about a subject, we cannot have any of the statements in that set
negate the truth of any other statement in that same set. For
example, we have a set of two statements about Judas. 1) Judas hung
himself. 2) Judas fell down and his bowels spilled out. Neither
statement about Judas contradicts the other. That is, neither
statement makes the other impossible because neither excludes the
possibility of the other. The statements can be harmonized by
stating: Judas hung himself and then his body fell down and his
bowels spilled out.
In order to make the set of statements contradictory, we would have
something like: 1) Judas hung himself. 2) Judas did not hang
himself. Since either statement excludes the possibility of the
other, we would then have a contradiction.

SAINT OF THE WEEK
- St. Elizabeth of Portugal (1271-1336): July 4th
Elizabeth is usually depicted in royal garb with a dove or an olive
branch. At her birth in 1271, her father, Pedro III, future king of
Aragon, was reconciled with his father, James, the reigning
monarch. This proved to be a portent of things to come. Under the
healthful influences surrounding her early years, she quickly
learned self-discipline and acquired a taste for spirituality. Thus
fortunately prepared, she was able to meet the challenge when, at
the age of 12, she was given in marriage to Denis, king of
Portugal. She was able to establish for herself a pattern of life
conducive to growth in God's love, not merely through her exercises
of piety, including daily Mass, but also through her exercise of
charity, by which she was able to befriend and help pilgrims,
strangers, the sick, the poor--in a word, all those whose need came
to her notice. At the same time she remained devoted to her
husband, whose infidelity to her was a scandal to the kingdom.
He, too, was the object of many of her peace endeavors. She long
sought peace for him with God, and was finally rewarded when he
gave up his life of sin. She repeatedly sought and effected peace
between the king and their rebellious son, Alfonso, who thought
that he was passed over to favor the king's illegitimate children.
She acted as peacemaker in the struggle between Ferdinand, king of
Aragon, and his cousin James, who claimed the crown. And finally
from Coimbra, where she had retired as a Franciscan tertiary to the
monastery of the Poor Clares after the death of her husband, she
set out and was able to bring about a lasting peace between her son
Alfonso, now king of Portugal, and his son-in-law, the king of
Castile.

BOOK OF THE WEEK
"Book of the Lover and the Beloved," by Ramon Lull. Paulist Press,
1978.
-
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0766175529/ref=noism/christianspiritu/
This book is called an extravagant religious romance and is written
in terms of a Lover as a faithful and devout Christian and the
Beloved as God. The author lived between 1232 and 1316, a native of
Majorca. Here he was among Moors and was brought into contact at an
early age with various religious traditions and ethnic groups. He
served as a page in a royal court and there he composed love lyrics
like troubadours did at that time, and he sang these to his
mistress . He married Blanca Picany in 1257.At the age of 30 while
composing a troubadour song, he received a vision of the Christ
crucified, which vision was repeated five times. After these
visions his sole desire was to serve God and to read the Gospels.
He became a "Fool of Love" as he called himself, a holy troubadour
singing of the love of God.
His writings speak constantly of the message of love found in the
Gospels. His writings were greatly influenced by Franciscan and
Dominican spirituality. In his love songs, he placed a strong
emphasis on reason. His writings consist of short verses, which he
adapted to the 365 days of the year. Each verse is meant to be
contemplated, not just read, for an entire day.
A sample reflection: "The Lover wanted to sleep for he had worked
hard seeking for his Beloved, and he was afraid that he might
forget him. And he wept for fear that he might fall asleep and
might not remember his Beloved."
This book is considered to be one of the masterpieces of the
spiritual quest literature of the Christian Middle Ages. Lull's
theory reflects Franciscan tenderness and Jewish and Islamic modes
of mystical expression.

WEB SITE OF THE WEEK
Spiritual Emergence
- http://www.spiritualemergence.org.au/pages/what_is.html
- from the web site -
Spiritual Emergence has been defined as
"the movement of an individual to a more expanded way of being
that involves enhanced emotional and psychosomatic health, greater
freedom of personal choices, and a sense of deeper connection with
other people, nature, and the cosmos. An important part of this
development is an increasing awareness of the spiritual dimension
in one's life and in the universal scheme of things." (Grof & Grof,
1990)
When Spiritual Emergence is very rapid and dramatic this natural
process can become a crisis, and Spiritual Emergence becomes
Spiritual Emergency. This has also been called transpersonal
crisis, acute psychosis with a positive outcome, positive
disintegration and extreme states. There is no sharp division
between Emergence and Emergency, however distinguishing criteria
include:-
a) an 'Emergency' generally has more depth and intensity
b) an 'Emergence' is more fluid and less overwhelming/traumatic
c) during an 'Emergency' it is very difficult to function in
everyday life
(Lots of good links to read of personal accounts, contrasting
emergence with pyschosis, forms of spiritual emergence, and related
issues.)

JOKE OF THE WEEK
- Moral of the story....
A missionary, in Africa, was out taking a walk in the jungle.
Suddenly, he heard a noise from the brush in front of him. It was a
lion. He started to back up and heard a noise from behind. Sure
enough, it was another lion. He looked to his left and then to his
right. You guessed it, lions were on both sides. It looked grim, so
the missionary sat down where he was and started to read his Bible.
Shortly after he started reading, the lions jumped the missionary
and ate him.
Moral of the story: Never read between the lions.
