THEOLOGY NOTE OF THE WEEK

- Law

The Law is God's instructions concerning the moral, social, and
spiritual behavior of His people found in the first five books of
the Bible. The Law is the very reflection of the nature of God
because God speaks out of the abundance of what is in Him.
Therefore, since God is pure, the Law is pure. Since God is holy,
the Law is holy. The Law consists of the 10 commandments (Exodus
20), rules for social life (Exodus 21-23), and rules for the
worship of God (Exodus 25-31). It was a covenant of works between
God and man and was (and is) unable to deliver us into eternal
fellowship with the Lord because of Man's inability to keep it. The
Law is a difficult taskmaster because it requires that we maintain
a perfect standard of moral behavior. And then when we fail, the
Law condemns us to death. We deserve death even if we fail to keep
just one point of the law: "For whoever keeps the whole law and yet
stumbles in one point, he has become guilty of all," (James 2:10).

The law made nothing perfect (Heb. 7:19). That is why the Law has
shown us our need for Jesus and the free gift we receive through
Him (Gal. 3:24).

SAINT OF THE WEEK

- St. Cyril of Alexandria (376?-444): June 27

Saints are not born with halos around their heads. Cyril,
recognized as a great teacher of the Church, began his career as
archbishop of Alexandria, Egypt, with impulsive, often violent,
actions. He pillaged and closed the churches of the Novatian
heretics, participated in the deposing of St. John Chrysostom
(September 13) and confiscated Jewish property, expelling the Jews
from Alexandria in retaliation for their attacks on Christians.

Cyril's importance for theology and Church history lies in his
championing the cause of orthodoxy against the heresy of Nestorius.

The controversy centered around the two natures in Christ.
Nestorius would not agree to the title "God-bearer" for Mary. He
preferred "Christ-bearer," saying there are two distinct persons in
Christ (divine and human) joined only by a moral union. He said
Mary was not the mother of God but only of the man Christ, whose
humanity was only a temple of God. Nestorianism implied that the
humanity of Christ was a mere disguise.

Presiding as the pope's representative at the Council of Ephesus
(431), Cyril condemned Nestorianism and proclaimed Mary truly the
"God-bearer" (the mother of the one Person who is truly God and
truly human). In the confusion that followed, Cyril was deposed and
imprisoned for three months, after which he was welcomed back to
Alexandria as a second Athanasius (the champion against Arianism).

Besides needing to soften some of his opposition to those who had
sided with Nestorius, Cyril had difficulties with some of his own
allies, who thought he had gone too far, sacrificing not only
language but orthodoxy. Until his death, his policy of moderation
kept his extreme partisans under control. On his deathbed, despite
pressure, he refused to condemn the teacher of Nestorius.

BOOK OF THE WEEK

"Jesus Our Brother: the Humanity of the Lord," by Wilfrid
J.Harrington OP. Paulist Press, 2010.
-
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/9780809146710/ref=noism/christianspiritu/

The author intends to present his readers with an insightful and
authentic as possible a picture of the human Jesus. Harrington
gives the call to mission of Jesus, the ways He saw Himself and was
regarded by others, the concerns of the Christ, the priorities He
had, and the reactions of others to His person and His vision.

The portrait becomes one of a Palestinian Jew from an obscure
village in Galilee, one who lived under the oppressive yoke of the
Roman occupation, one who showed compassion for the underdogs of
society, one who proved to be a compassionate and loving religious
Man. Jesus is presented as a dutiful Son of the Father, one who was
able to withstand severe trials and temptations, one who was not
afraid to challenge the religious order of the day, one who could
become exasperated with opponents and disciples alike.

Was Jesus an uncomfortable person to be around? Was He too
challenging for His own good? Was He deeply involved in the
everyday life of His contemporaries? Would the readers of this
book find Jesus just too human? Was He too familiar with the women
with whom He associated? Were His healings truly miracles or were
they magic? Were His teachings on forgiveness authentic and
practical? Did He expect too much of His twelve or not enough? Is
there evidence that Jesus had a sense of humor? Was His relation to
sinners authentic and compassionate? Harrington answers these
questions and more.

The five sections of this book present Jesus' life, His concerns,
His traits, His reaction, and His triumph over failure.

JOKE OF THE WEEK

- Praise the Lord...

An elderly lady was well-known for her faith and for her boldness
in talking about it. She would stand on her front porch and shout,
"PRAISE THE LORD!"

Next door to her lived an atheist who would get so angry at her
proclamations that he would shout, "There ain't no Lord!"

Hard times set in on the elderly lady, and she prayed for God to
send her some assistance. She stood on her porch and shouted,
"PRAISE THE LORD! God, I need food. I am having a hard time.
Please, Lord, send me some groceries."

The next morning, the lady went out on her porch and noted a large
bag of groceries and shouted, "PRAISE THE LORD!"

The neighbor jumped from behind a bush and said, "HA...HA. I told
you there was no Lord! I bought those groceries, myself! God
didn't!"

The lady started jumping up and down and clapping her hands and
saying, "PRAISE THE LORD! He not only sent me groceries, but He
made the Devil pay for them! PRAISE THE LORD!"
