MESSAGE OF THE DAY
Never again are we to look at the stars, as we did when we were
children, and wonder how far it is to God. A being outside our
world would be a spectator, looking on but taking no part in this
life where we try to be brave despite all the bafflement. A God who
created, and withdrew, could be mighty, but he could not be love.
Who could love a God remote, when suffering is our lot? Our God is
closer than our problems, for they are out there, to be faced; He
is here, beside us, Emmanuel.

LECTIONARY READINGS FOR THE DAY
http://www.nccbuscc.org/nab/
Acts 25:13b-21; Ps. 103:1-2, 11-12, 19-20; Jn 21:15-19
R. (19a) The Lord has established his throne in heaven.
Bless the LORD, O my soul;
and all my being, bless his holy name.
Bless the LORD, O my soul,
and forget not all his benefits.
For as the heavens are high above the earth,
so surpassing is his kindness toward those who fear him.
As far as the east is from the west,
so far has he put our transgressions from us.
The LORD has established his throne in heaven,
and his kingdom rules over all.
Bless the LORD, all you his angels,
you mighty in strength, who do his bidding.

MEDITATION ON THE SCRIPTURES
- from
http://onlineministries.creighton.edu/CollaborativeMinistry/daily.html
The Good Shepherd is enlisting this errant sheep in the Master's
own work of shepherding. Peter is given an opportunity to
demonstrate the love he professed by sharing in the mission of the
risen Lord. Ultimately, it is going to be a matter of being led
where he does not want to go. Loving the head shepherd will entail
following him even to a death like his. But he need not fear. The
Lord stands there full of risen life, a life Peter can also share
already in the act of following.
In our own small way, each of us who claims to be a disciple of
Jesus is invited into that same act of trust, as people forgiven
and assigned our particular task.

SPIRITUAL READING
- Fenelon's "Maxims of the Saints"
True holiness of heart is the object at which the Christian aims.
He beholds it before him, as an object of transcendent beauty, and
as perhaps near at hand. But as he advances towards it, he finds
the way longer and more difficult than he had imagined. But if on
the one hand we should be careful not to mistake an intermediate
stopping place for the end of the way, we should be equally careful
on the other not to be discouraged by the difficulties we meet
with; remembering that the obligation to be holy is always binding
upon us, and that God will help those who put their trust in Him.
"Whatsoever is born of God, overcomes the world; and this is the
victory that overcomes the world, EVEN OUR FAITH." (1 John v.4.)
