SPIRITUAL GROWTH RESOURCES FOR THE EASTER SEASON
"Jesus is Risen!"
- https://www.smashwords.com/books/view/33561 (various ebook
formats)
Free download.
The foundational conviction for a Christian's attitude is belief in
the resurrection of Jesus. We examine the evidence for the
resurrection and show how we can encounter the risen Christ
today--how we can make sense of pain and problems, and learn to
live the risen life.

(paperback)
- https://www.smashwords.com/books/view/41961 (various ebook
formats)
This work bundles together three related works previously published
for different purposes.
Part One - "The Meaning of the Resurrection," examines the evidence
of the Resurrection and then treats its implications for the life
of the believer.
Part Two - "Encountering the Risen Christ," reflects on meeting
the risen Christ in his four modes of present to us:
personal/historical, communal, sacramental and cosmic. Part Three -
"The Gift of the Spirit," notes the decisive role of the Holy
Spirit in the lives of early Christian believers, and in our own as
well. The theme running through these three parts is that Jesus of
Nazareth is risen, and that we can come to know him and give
evidence of his life and love in our own as well.

R. (1) Let all the earth cry out to God with joy.
Shout joyfully to God, all the earth,
sing praise to the glory of his name;
proclaim his glorious praise.
Say to God, "How tremendous are your deeds!"
"Let all on earth worship and sing praise to you,
sing praise to your name!"
Come and see the works of God,
his tremendous deeds among the children of Adam.
He has changed the sea into dry land;
through the river they passed on foot;
therefore let us rejoice in him.
He rules by his might forever.
Hear now, all you who fear God, while I declare
what he has done for me.
Blessed be God who refused me not
my prayer or his kindness!

THEOLOGY NOTE OF THE WEEK
- Kathenotheism
Kathenotheism is the worship of one god at a time among many gods.
Therefore, it is possible to believe in many gods and to focus
worship and service to one of them at a time (sequentially)
depending on the needs and circumstances. It can also mean that
one God become supreme over another at different times.

SAINT OF THE WEEK
St. Justin (d. 165): June 1
Justin never ended his quest for religious truth even when he
converted to Christianity after years of studying various pagan
philosophies.
As a young man, he was principally attracted to the school of
Plato. However, he found that the Christian religion answered the
great questions about life and existence better than the
philosophers.
Upon his conversion he continued to wear the philosopher's mantle,
and became the first Christian philosopher. He combined the
Christian religion with the best elements in Greek philosophy. In
his view, philosophy was a pedagogue of Christ, an educator that
was to lead one to Christ.
Justin is known as an apologist, one who defends in writing the
Christian religion against the attacks and misunderstandings of the
pagans. Two of his so-called apologies have come down to us; they
are addressed to the Roman emperor and to the Senate.
For his staunch adherence to the Christian religion, Justin was
beheaded in Rome in 165.

BOOK OF THE WEEK
"Blessed John Henry Newman," by Keith Beaumont. Ignatius Press,
2010.
-
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/1586175521/ref=noism/christianspiritu/
Blessed John is called a theologian and spiritual guide for our
times. This book is the official biography for the beatification by
Pope Benedict XVI of John Henry Cardinal Newman and was
commissioned by the Provost of the Birmingham Oratory. The aim of
the book is to give a broad presentation of Newman by means of a
brief biographical sketch, a choice of extracts from his writings,
and a large number of attractive illustrations. On the back cover
there is a prayer for the canonization of Blessed John Newman.
The many chapters which give clearly in much detail the life of the
man are interspersed with many portraits painted throughout his
lifetime. These portraits show Newman as a young man, as an
intellectual, as an earnest seeker of the truth, as a man who truly
was in tune with his Maker. Poems and writings, sermons, and
lectures are given in whole or in part and show his journey in
search of the Truth. A favorite poem is "Lead Kindly Light" which
is spoken and sung world wide.
The numerous first person quotes make the book an interesting read.
A closing section tells of the miracle which is said to have been
worked through his intercession and is the miracle used for his
beatification. Jack Sullivan, a candidate for priesthood, was
suffering from terrific back problems and was healed through the
intercession of John Newman. Sullivan said he hadn't actually asked
for a healing but a relief from pain so he could proceed to
priesthood studies. The pain left him but within a matter of
months, it returned in full force. Again Sullivan prayed to Newman,
and again the pain left him, never to return. The doctors were
never able to explain the sudden and complete relief from pain.
Jack Sullivan went on to ordination and continues to today to pray
in gratitude to John Newman.

How does oil speculation raise gas prices?
No, it's not about supply and demand, but is largely manipulation
of the oils futures market by speculators. Here's a quote.
"Investment firms that can influence the oil futures market stand
to make a lot; oil companies that both produce the commodity and
drive prices up of their product up through oil futures derivatives
stand to make even more. Investigations into the unregulated oil
futures exchanges turned up major financial institutions like
Goldman Sachs and Citigroup. But it also revealed energy producers
like Vitol, a Swiss company that owned 11 percent of the oil
futures contracts on the New York Mercantile Exchange alone
[source: Washington Post].
"As a result of speculation among these and other major players, an
estimated 60 percent of the price of oil per barrel was added; a
$100 barrel of oil, in reality, should cost $40 [source: Engdahl].
And despite having an agency created to prevent just such
speculative price inflation, by the time oil prices skyrocketed,
the government had made a paper tiger out of it."
Every extra dollar we spend on fuel to fatten the pocket books of
Wall St. firms and "big oil" is money that could be spent
elsewhere. It's like taxing the citizenry without providing any
goods and services in exchange. It's a moral outrage!
If this all bothers you, please do contact your government leaders
to protest this outrage!

JOKE OF THE WEEK
- Fridge words . . .
A kindergartner was practicing spelling with magnetic letters on
the refrigerator: cat, dog, dad, and mom had been proudly displayed
for all to see.
One morning while getting ready for the day, he bounded into the
room with his arms outstretched. In his hands were three magnetic
letters: G-O-D.
"Look what I spelled, Mom!" with a proud smile on his face.
"That's wonderful!" his mom praised him. "Now go put them on the
fridge so Dad can see when he gets home tonight."
The mom happily thought that her son's Catholic education was
certainly having an impact.
Just then, a little voice called from the kitchen: "Mom? How do you
spell 'zilla'?"
