MESSAGE OF THE DAY
My father had never lost his temper with us, never beaten us, but
we had for him that feeling often described as fear, which is
something quite different and far deeper than alarm. It was that
sense which, without irreverence, I have thought to find expressed
by the great evangelists when they speak of the fear of God. One
does not fear God because He is terrible, but because He is
literally the soul of goodness and truth, because to do Him wrong
is to do wrong to some mysterious part of oneself, and one does not
know exactly what the consequences may be.

"I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and your joy may
be complete."
St. Philip Neri, a priest known for his humility and good humor,
had a keen sense of the connection between love and a joyful
spirit. "Cheerfulness strengthens the heart and makes us persevere
in a good life," he wrote. "Therefore the servant of God ought
always to be in good spirits." In Jesus' farewell discourse, love
is like a thread woven back and forth throughout, the tie that
binds all together: the Father's love for Jesus, reciprocated by
Jesus and shared with and among his disciples through the Spirit.
We remain in God -- Father, Son and Holy Spirit -- through love.
"May we delight always in following Jesus and obeying his commands.
For complete joy in the Lord, we pray."
