MESSAGE OF THE DAY

God has reserved to Himself the right to determine the end of life, because He alone knows the goal to which it is His will to lead it. It is for Him alone to justify a life or to cast it away.

SCRIPTURE READINGS
     http://www.nccbuscc.org/nab/

Gn 28:10-22a;   Ps 91:1-2, 3-4, 14-15ab;   Mt 9:18-26

R.    (see 2b) In you, my God, I place my trust.

You who dwell in the shelter of the Most High,
who abide in the shadow of the Almighty,
Say to the LORD, “My refuge and my fortress,
my God, in whom I trust.”

For he will rescue you from the snare of the fowler,
from the destroying pestilence.
With his pinions he will cover you,
and under his wings you shall take refuge.

Because he clings to me, I will deliver him;
I will set him on high because he acknowledges my name.
He shall call upon me, and I will answer him;
I will be with him in distress.

- Matthew 9:18-26 (Two miraculous cures)

In today’s reading Jesus restores a young girl to life and heals an elderly woman who had hemorrhaged for twelve years. In an age when women and children are disenfranchised in society, Jesus’ treatment of women is quite revolutionary.

• What does our culture consider qualities of masculinity and femininity? How do these stereotypes limit male and female self-expression?

• How do you feel about the Church’s treatment of male and female sexuality? Why?

• Pray for the grace to be more open to the gifts of others.

THEOLOGICAL GEMS FROM EMIL MERCH'S THEOLOGY OF THE MYSTICAL BODY
   from http://www.innerexplorations.com/chtheomortext/theolgems.htm

173. Mary joins Jesus Christ to the whole Church by joining Him to mankind… Her role… is to give Christ, to be the mother of Christians and the spouse of the Spirit.

174. There is nothing extraordinary in Mary’s life.

176. Her function, her natural inclination and her spontaneous action in the order of grace is to unite, to intercede, to request, to obtain. "Even when she is not invoked, of her own accord she is always at hand to help us."

LECTIO DIVINA METHOD (Benedictine Approach)

1. Relax. Settle in. Be aware that God is here, now, loving you.
2. Read a short passage of Scripture as though God were speaking directly to you in it.
3. Choose a phrase from the passage that strikes you and repeat it slowly, prayerfully, non-analytically.
4. When your heart is full, express to God the needs and sentiments awakened by your meditation. When you're done, read another passage and repeat steps 3 and 4.
5. If, at any time, you feel moved to simply be present to God in loving silence, put the Scripture aside and rest in God.
