MESSAGE OF THE DAY

To dare is to risk losing your foothold for a moment.
Not to dare is to risk losing yourself.
   - Soren Kierkegaard

(What kinds of risks are confronting you at this time in your life?  Pray for the grace of courage to step out in faith.)

SCRIPTURE READINGS

2 Cor 6:1-10;   Ps 98:1, 2b, 3ab, 3cd-4;   Mt 5:38-42

R.    (2a) The Lord has made known his salvation.

Sing to the LORD a new song,
for he has done wondrous deeds;
His right hand has won victory for him,
his holy arm.

In the sight of the nations he has revealed his justice.
He has remembered his kindness and his faithfulness
toward the house of Israel.

All the ends of the earth have seen
the salvation by our God.
Sing joyfully to the LORD, all you lands;
break into song; sing praise.

- Matthew 5: 38-42 (Nonviolent resistance)

Today's reading addresses the issue of breaking the cycle of violence.  Because violence begets violence, Jesus commands his followers to refuse to perpetuate this cycle.  Nonviolent resistance, he believes, is the best way to convert the violent of this world.

  • "An eye for an eye is making the world blind," Gandhi said. Do you agree? Do you believe Jesus commanded us to refuse to stand up to evil? How should a Christian respond to evil?

    Chapter 8: Mary, Mother of Jesus

    170. The essence of Christianity is union and unity.

    Devotion to the Blessed Virgin goes with devotion to Christ.

    171. The essential thing about Christ is He is perfectly God, perfectly man, perfectly one. The essential thing about the Blessed Virgin is her part in making her Son perfectly man.

    LECTIO DIVINA METHOD (Benedictine Approach)

    1. Relax. Settle in. Be aware that God is here, now, loving you.
    2. Read a short passage of Scripture as though God were speaking directly to you in it.
    3. Choose a phrase from the passage that strikes you and repeat it slowly, prayerfully, non-analytically.
    4. When your heart is full, express to God the needs and sentiments awakened by your meditation. When you're done, read another passage and repeat steps 3 and 4.
    5. If, at any time, you feel moved to simply be present to God in loving silence, put the Scripture aside and rest in God.
