R. (cf. 30) Lord, send out your
Spirit, and renew the face of the earth.
Bless the LORD, O my soul!
O LORD, my God, you are great indeed!
How manifold are your works, O LORD!
the earth is full of your creatures;
May the glory of the LORD endure forever;
may the LORD be glad in his works!
Pleasing to him be my theme;
I will be glad in the LORD.
If you take away their breath, they perish
and return to their dust.
When you send forth your spirit, they are created,
and you renew the face of the earth.
Bless the LORD, O my soul!

How manifold are your works, O LORD!

SAINT OF THE WEEK
- May 28: St. Bernard of Aosta [Bernard of Menthon].
Claimed as a national by both French and Italians, hence the variant of his name, he was in fact probably of Italian origin, and was ordained in the diocese of Aosta, in the extreme N.W. of Italy above Turin and towards the St. Bernard Pass. He was later Vicar-General of the diocese and was distinguished for his 42 years of systematic visitations, preaching, and foundation of schools and churches. He had a particular concern for travellers across the Alps, who were much at risk from snowdrifts and highway robbers. He founded a number of refuges or guest-houses, staffed by Austin Canons, to guard the Alpine routes; these Canons developed the specially trained breed of rescue dog, with their famous brandy barrels, called the ‘St. Bernard’ after this saint. He died in 1081. In 1923, Pope Pius XI, an enthusiastic mountain climber, named him patron of all mountaineers.

BOOK OF THE WEEK
"Here I am Lord: The Letters and Writings of Ita Ford," by Jeanne Evans, editor. Orbis Books, 2005.
- http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/1570756058/ref=noism/christianspiritu/
Four
brave women gave their lives in EI Salvador in 1980, showing the
terrible brutality of the government and witnessing to the Cross of
Jesus. This book is a compilation of some of the letters, writings, and
life of Sister Ita Ford, a Maryknoll missionary. Herein is the story of
Ita's spiritual journey from her early life and decision to enter
Maryknoll, to experiences in Chile and Nicaragua, and ending in her
being brutally slain because she espoused the cause of poor refugees. Ita had everything going for her in a comfortable iife in America, loved life, enjoyed theater, art museums, and concerts, as an educated and thoroughly upper class daughter in Brooklyn where she was born on April 23, 1930. But in the midst of her exciting life there was always the undercurrent and desire for missionary life in a faraway country, ministering among God's poorest. She entered the Maryknoll community, had to leave because of poor health, and entered again and was allowed to minister in Chile and Central America.
Even after twenty-five years, her story speaks of hope, and challenges one to live daily into the paschal mystery which leads to resurrection. From Chile she wrote in 1973: "And there is talk of a repeat of last October's general strike which paralyzed the country. If it happens it will be a very difficult time because there already are great shortages of food ... I can't say the people are gloomy. There's an incredible adaptability to the circumstances and a great sense of humor. I must say I'm learning all kinds of lessons on where you put priorities-and just what are some of the basic pleasures of life."
Three days before her death, Ita wrote: "Christ invites us not to fear persecution ... He who is committed to the poor must suffer the same fate as the poor. And in EI Salvador we know what the fate of the poor signifies, to disappear, to be tortured, to be captive, to be found dead ... Rejoice and be glad because your reward will be great in heaven." Her mutilated body was buried in a pasture.

JOKE OF THE WEEK
A pain in the leg . . .
An old man goes to his doctor, complaining about a pain in his leg that doesn't heal, and wants a diagnosis and explanation. The doctor checks out his leg, but can't find anything wrong, so he gives the old guy a full physical exam, and still can't come up with any possible explanation for the pain.
The doctor hands the patient his bill and says, "I'm sorry, but the pain in your leg is simply caused by old age; there's nothing I can do about it."
The old man replies with a look of disbelief, "That's impossible! That can't be!"
The Doctor says, "What do you mean? I'm the expert here; if you know so much, how can you say it's NOT old age?"
The patient answers, "I'm no doctor but it doesn't take a medical degree to tell that your diagnosis is wrong. Clearly you're mistaken. After all, my other leg feels just fine."
"So what?" says the doctor "What difference does that make?"
"Well it doesn't hurt a bit, and it's the SAME AGE!"
