So may your way be known upon earth;

May the nations be glad and exult
because you rule the peoples in equity;

SAINT OF THE WEEK

- May 15th. St. Pachomius.

St. Antony of Egypt is usually called the ‘founder of monasticism’, although he was a hermit who later travelled to give encouragement to other religious living in isolated cells in the Egyptian desert. However, the title really belongs to Pachomius, who became a Christian in Egypt on leaving the army in 313. He too began as a hermit, but soon made use of exceptional administrative gifts to bring together communities of men and women, beginning in 320. They were organised on very practical lines, according to the trades which the monks practised to earn funds to support their life. There was a certain military precision in Pachomius’ method; monks could be transferred from one community to another; each house was given a local superior and all leaders met twice annually, to render an account of their community life. Pachomius’ rule was thus highly centralised and disciplined, as well as being austere, though not extreme (unlike some of the hermitages). St. Jerome translated Pachomius’ Rule into Latin, thus making it widely available; it influenced the later and more widespread Rules of Basil and Benedict. He died in 346.

BOOK OF THE WEEK

"Women in Church History: 21 stories for 21 centuries," by Joanne Turpin. St. Anthony Messenger Press, 1990.
- http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0867167769/ref=noism/christianspiritu/

"Jesus made no secret about his feelings toward women." Thus Turpin begins her book of the stories of 21 women, one for each of the 21 centuries since the birth of Jesus. She tells her readers that Jesus gifted them with his healing touch, invited them to be among his disciples, and welcomed them as his friends. They supported his mission, followed him to the hill of Calvary, and remained faithful near the tomb. The author gives the messages of women who have continued to follow in the footsteps of Jesus, enduring persecution in the first century and in the 21 st.

According to Leonardo Boff, "Strong, independent, decisive women have never been lacking in the history of the Church to show forth the feminine in its true qualities." This book places the stories of the famous and the not so famous against the background of the church in her specific century.

As the author researched the stories, she came upon two strong messages, namely, each woman understood the true meaning of love, and knew how to give loving service. This book includes such women as Catherine of Siena, Teresa of Avila, Prisca, Clare, Jean Donovan, Dorothy Stang, Brigid, and Hildegard. Turpin walked with women in the Near East, in Europe, in the Western Hemisphere, and even reached into the Southern Hemisphere where she discovered women who were "almost mad with the loveliness of life." Several gave their lives for the Jesus whom they called their friend.

WEB SITE OF THE WEEK

Sitcoms through the decades
- http://www.sitcomsonline.com/a.html

Just for fun.  This site has descriptions and trivia about all the sitcoms that have ever aired on T.V. in the U.S.  The link above takes you to a page where you can play the theme songs and even view the video of the weekly opening intro.  Use the alphabetical index at the top to access a comprehensive listing.  There's a bit of nostalgia to be found in listening to those old theme songs.

JOKE OF THE WEEK

A Sunday school teacher was discussing the Ten Commandments with her five and six year olds. After explaining the commandment to "honor thy father and thy mother," she asked, "is there a commandment that teaches us how to treat our brothers and sisters?"

Without missing a beat one little boy (the oldest of a family of seven) answered, "thou shall not kill."

- - -

Three boys are in the school yard bragging about their fathers. The first boy says, "My Dad scribbles a few words on a piece of paper, he calls it a poem, they give him $50."

The second boy says, "That's nothing. My Dad scribbles a few words on a piece of paper, he calls it a song, they give him $100."

Little Johnny says, "I got you both beat. My Dad scribbles a few words on a piece of paper, he calls it a sermon, and it takes eight people to collect all the money!"
