SPIRITUAL GROWTH RESOURCE OF THE MONTH
"Jesus on the Cross: WHY?"
- by Philip St. Romain
- Free shipping on orders of two or more books!
What exactly do we mean when we say that Jesus died for our sins?
What are the implications of his death for our lives today? In this
book, author Philip St. Romain elaborates an understanding of the
crucifixion that makes sense today, and shows how this
understanding and appreciation can make a difference in people's
lives. St. Romain's reflections focus on several themes, including
the crucifixion as a fulfillment of the Jewish traditions of a
suffering servant; as a new covenant between God and the human
race; as an expiatory sacrifice; as a means of breaking the power
of sin. His discussions are carried on in pastoral terms derived
from scripture and his experience of living and working in the
world. Most chapters include a section on catechetical
considerations of a renewed understanding of the crucifixion, as
well as questions for personal reflection and discussion.

WEEKEND READINGS
http://www.nccbuscc.org/nab/
Saturday: 1 Kgs 19:19-21; Ps 16:1b-2a and 5, 7-8, 9-10; Lk
2:41-51
Sunday: 2 Sm 12:7-10, 13; Ps 32:1-2, 5, 7, 11; Gal 2:16,
19-21; Lk 7:36--8:3
R. Lord, forgive the wrong I have done.
Blessed is the one whose fault is taken away,
whose sin is covered.
Blessed the man to whom the LORD imputes not guilt,
in whose spirit there is no guile.
I acknowledged my sin to you,
my guilt I covered not.
I said, "I confess my faults to the LORD,"
and you took away the guilt of my sin.
You are my shelter; from distress you will preserve me;
with glad cries of freedom you will ring me round.
Be glad in the LORD and rejoice, you just;
exult, all you upright of heart.

THEOLOGY NOTE OF THE WEEK
- Gentile
Those who are not Jews. Gentiles were used by God to punish
apostate Judea (Deut. 28:49; 1 Kings 8:33) and often included in
blessings by God upon the Jewish people. "Gentiles" is often used
biblically in reference to nations.

SAINT OF THE WEEK
- St. Joseph Cafasso (1811-1860)
Even as a young man, Joseph loved to attend Mass and was known for
his humility and fervor in prayer. After his ordination he was
assigned to a seminary in Turin. There he worked especially against
the spirit of Jansenism, an excessive preoccupation with sin and
damnation. Joseph used the works of St. Francis de Sales and St.
Alphonsus Liguori to moderate the rigorism popular at the seminary.
Joseph recommended membership in the Secular Franciscan Order to
priests. He urged devotion to the Blessed Sacrament and encouraged
daily Communion. In addition to his teaching duties, Joseph was an
excellent preacher, confessor and retreat master. Noted for his
work with condemned prisoners, Joseph helped many of them die at
peace with God.
St. John Bosco was one of Joseph's pupils. Joseph urged John Bosco
to establish the Salesians to work with the youth of Turin. Joseph
was canonized in 1947.

BOOK OF THE WEEK
"Selected Poems of Thomas Merton," with an introduction by Mark Van
Doren. New Directions 1967
-
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/1414333072/ref=noism/christianspiritu/
This many times published book of the poems of Thomas Merton shows
the author with an increased engagement with social issues. The
book gives a more representative sampling of the work of a
prominent Catholic poet and one of the most vital American poets of
the century.
In the introduction van Doren dwells on the poem "Elegy for the
Monastery Barn" and shows that this is the typical type of poem the
readers will find in the book. The titles of all the poems given
lure one into the daily living of the poet and show how the mundane
can be brought to light and be the occasion for comic and
interesting images.
Here are some of the titles which can arouse interest and wonder as
they came from a secluded Trappist monk: What to think when it
rains blood, Song of nobody, Elegy of James Thurber, Love winter
when the plant says nothing, An elegy for five old ladies, To a
severe nun, The candlemas procession, and The house of Caiphas.
In his poem entitled Wisdom, Merton writes:
I studied and it taught me nothing.
I learned it and soon forgot everything else:
Having forgotten, I was burdened with knowledge--
The unsupportable knowledge of nothing.
How sweet my life would be, if I were wise!
Wisdom is well known
When it is no longer seen or thought of.
Only then is understanding bearable

JOKE OF THE WEEK
- The wise prophet
A medieval astrologer prophesied to a king that his favorite
mistress would soon die.
Sure enough, the woman died a short time later. The king was
outraged at the astrologer, certain that his prophecy had brought
about the woman's death. He summoned the astrologer and gave him
this command: "Prophet, tell me when you will die!"
The astrologer realized that the king was planning to kill him,
immediately, no matter what answer he gave. So he said, finally, "I
do not know when I will die. I only know that whenever I die, you
will die three days later."
