WEEKEND READINGS
http://www.nccbuscc.org/nab/
Saturday: Jude 17, 20b-25; Ps 63:2, 3-4, 5-6; Mk 11:27-33
Sunday: Prv 8:22-31; Ps 8:4-5, 6-7, 8-9; Rom 5:1-5; Jn
16:12-15
R. O Lord, our God, how wonderful your name in all the earth!
When I behold your heavens, the work of your fingers,
the moon and the stars which you set in place --
What is man that you should be mindful of him,
or the son of man that you should care for him?
You have made him little less than the angels,
and crowned him with glory and honor.
You have given him rule over the works of your hands,
putting all things under his feet:
All sheep and oxen,
yes, and the beasts of the field,
The birds of the air, the fishes of the sea,
and whatever swims the paths of the seas.

THEOLOGY NOTE OF THE WEEK
- Gehenna
Originally, a location southwest of Jerusalem where children were
burned as sacrifices to the god Molech. It later became a garbage
dump with a continuous burning of trash. Therefore, it was used
biblically, to illustrate the abode of the damned in Christian and
Jewish theology. Gehenna is mentioned in Mark 9:43ff and Matt.
10:28 as the place of punishment of unquenchable fire where both
the body and soul of the wicked go after death. It is apparently
the future abode of Satan and his angels (Matt. 25:41).

SAINT OF THE WEEK
- Charles Lwanga and Companions (June 3)
One of 22 Ugandan martyrs, Charles Lwanga is the patron of youth
and Catholic action in most of tropical Africa. He protected his
fellow pages (aged 13 to 30) from the homosexual demands of the
Bagandan ruler, Mwanga, and encouraged and instructed them in the
Catholic faith during their imprisonment for refusing the ruler's
demands. For his own unwillingness to submit to the immoral acts
and his efforts to safeguard the faith of his friends, Charles was
burned to death at Namugongo on June 3, 1886, by Mwanga's order.
Charles first learned of Christ's teachings from two retainers in
the court of Chief Mawulugungu. While a catechumen, he entered the
royal household as assistant to Joseph Mukaso, head of the court
pages.
On the night of Mukaso's martyrdom for encouraging the African
youths to resist Mwanga, Charles requested and received Baptism.
Imprisoned with his friends, Charles's courage and belief in God
inspired them to remain chaste and faithful.
When Pope Paul VI canonized these 22 martyrs on October 18, 1964,
he referred to the Anglican pages martyred for the same reason.

BOOK OF THE WEEK
"Water, Wind, Earth, and Fire: The Christian Practice of Praying
with the Elements," by Christine Valters Painter. Green Press, 2010.
-
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/1933495227/ref=noism/christianspiritu/
Divided into four chapters, the book is based on the "Canticle of
Creation" by St. Francis of Assisi. It explores the ways one can
pray with these elements of nature and how they can enliven one's
prayer life. In this book one finds concrete ideas, simple prayers,
and a wealth of thought- provoking quotations on how important the
elements are to one's prayer experiences.
The author shows her wide knowledge of Scripture, of the
patristics, of the mystical life of the saints, and of contemporary
poetry. She gives examples of how one can encounter God in nature.
Her writing is aimed to drawing the readers into contemplation and
relationship with nature.
A typical chapter might include writings from Mechtild, St.
Gertrude, the psalms, Catherine of Siena, Peter Mayer, Melville,
Rilke, Emerson, O'Donohue, Rachel Carson, Merton, and Isaiah. There
will also be questions for reflection, prayers for use with that
element in question, Lectio divina with the element, other
Scripture quotations, and a blessing of the specific element. The
book is dedicated to "Abbess Petunia and Abbot Duke whose
four-legged wisdom has taught me about the profound mysteries and
graces of the natural world. They have each revealed a face of God
in their being just who they were created to be." (Perhaps her dog
and cat or maybe her pet monkey)

JOKE OF THE WEEK
- The hotel lobby
A man, his wife, and his son from waaaay out in the mountains go to
the "big city" to a major hotel. When they get into the lobby, they
are directed to the front desk to check in. While the wife is
takin' care of the paper work, the man is looking all around at the
amazing things they have. One that catches his eyes is a recess in
the wall with a crack down the middle. Just then, an elderly woman
walks up, pushes a button next to the recess, and the wall opens up
to a small room! She walks in and the wall closes, while lights
above the secret doors flash along the top. They begin flashing in
the other direction, and moments later the wall opens up and a
shapely young lady, vougly dressed, sachays out, walking by the man
and his son whos eyes and dropped jaws follow her by.
The man looks back at the doors in the wall. "Boooyyy", says the
man to his son... "Go get your mother!"
