THEOLOGY NOTE OF THE WEEK
- Gap Theory
The gap theory is the idea that there is a gap in time between
Genesis 1:1 in Genesis 1:2. The gap lasted for millions of years
and accounts for the dinosaurs. This theory was begun by a
Scottish minister named Chalmers in 1814.
* Gen. 1:1, "In the beginning God created the heavens and the
earth."
* Gen. 1:2, "And the earth was formless and void, and darkness
was over the surface of the deep; and the Spirit of God was moving
over the surface of the waters.
Some say that the fall of Satan occured between these two verses
and that the fall resulted in the earth being formless and void,
i.e., the cataclysm. The theory states that Gen. 1:28 gives a hint
to this when it says, "And God blessed them; and God said to them,
"Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth, and subdue it; and
rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky, and
over every living thing that moves on the earth." The KJV uses the
word "replenish" instead of the word "fill" and it is from this
word that the theory is said to be validated. The theory is that
there must have been a destruction of the world that needed to be
replenished.
The word 'replenish' is mawlay and it means "to fill, be full,
fullness, abundance (participle), to be full, be accomplished, be
ended, to consecrate, fill the hand, to satisfy, to fulfil,
accomplish, complete, etc.1

SAINT OF THE WEEK
- St. Venerable Bede (672-735)
Bede is one of the few saints honored as such even during his
lifetime. His writings were filled with such faith and learning
that even while he was still alive, a Church council ordered them
to be read publicly in the churches.
At an early age Bede was entrusted to the care of the abbot of the
Monastery of St. Paul, Jarrow. The happy combination of genius and
the instruction of scholarly, saintly monks produced a saint and an
extraordinary scholar, perhaps the most outstanding one of his day.
He was deeply versed in all the sciences of his times: natural
philosophy, the philosophical principles of Aristotle, astronomy,
arithmetic, grammar, ecclesiastical history, the lives of the
saints and, especially, Holy Scripture. From the time of his
ordination to the priesthood at 30 (he had been ordained deacon at
19) till his death, he was ever occupied with learning, writing and
teaching. Besides the many books that he copied, he composed 45 of
his own, including 30 commentaries on books of the Bible.
Although eagerly sought by kings and other notables, even Pope
Sergius, Bede managed to remain in his own monastery till his
death. Only once did he leave for a few months in order to teach in
the school of the archbishop of York. Bede died in 735 praying his
favorite prayer: "Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to
the Holy Spirit. As in the beginning, so now, and forever."
His "Ecclesiastical History of the English People" is commonly
regarded as of decisive importance in the art and science of
writing history. A unique era was coming to an end at the time of
Bede's death: It had fulfilled its purpose of preparing Western
Christianity to assimilate the non-Roman barbarian North. Bede
recognized the opening to a new day in the life of the Church even
as it was happening.

BOOK OF THE WEEK
"A Holy Life: St. Bernadette of Lourdes," by Patricia A. McEachern.
Igantius Press, 2009.
-
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/158617116X/ref=noism/christianspiritu/
This book tells the story of the witness of the apparitions at
Lourdes, France. Although the story of the apparitions is well
known, few may know the life story of Bernadette Soubirous, who
was born in1844 and died in 1879. She was canonized in 1933. This
book centers on her spiritual insights and profound holiness
through a life of suffering and misunderstanding . It gives a wide
assortment of her spiritual writings, her advice, and prayers
through the touching words of her diary, her notes left behind, and
letters to family and friends.
Bernadette, after the appearance of Mary at Lourdes, became a
Sister of Charity where she lived a life of simplicity, charity,
suffering, and deep holiness. She died at the age of thirty-five.
Her body was found to be incorrupt at the time of her canonization.
Sister Marie Bernard (her religious name) suffered much but gave a
heroic response to suffering as she transformed her suffering into
spiritual fruitfulness. In her letters she shows how she grew in
the love of God and neighbor. She was ready to give her life for
the salvation of souls. She showed great concern for the problems
in her family and thus proved how human she really was. All in all,
Sister Marie Bernard offers the world great spiritual wisdom, and
needs to be recognized for more than being the recipient of
apparitions of Mary.

WEB SITE OF THE WEEK
The Holy Spirit
- http://www.theholyspirit.com/
Yes, that is really the URL of this web site! Lots of good, basic
information to be found on it, if you're needing a "refresher" on
Who the Spirit is and what a Gift we have been given. This Sunday
is Pentecost, when the Spirit was first poured out on the church,
so it's timely that we consider more deeply the Spirit's presence
in our lives.

JOKE OF THE WEEK
- Skipping Church
Father Norton woke up Sunday morning and realizing it was an
exceptionally beautiful and sunny early spring day, decided he just
had to play golf.
So... he told the Associate Pastor that he was feeling sick and
persuaded him to say Mass for him that day.
As soon as the Associate Pastor left the room, Father Norton headed
out of town to a golf course about forty miles away.
This way he knew he wouldn't accidentally meet anyone he knew from
his parish. Setting up on the first tee, he was alone. After all,
it was Sunday morning and everyone else was in church!
At about this time, Saint Peter leaned over to the Lord while
looking down from the heavens and exclaimed, "You're not going to
let him get away with this, are you?
The Lord sighed, and said, "No, I guess not."
Just then Father Norton hit the ball and it shot straight towards
the pin, dropping just short of it, rolled up and fell into the
hole.
IT WAS A 420 YARD HOLE IN ONE!
St. Peter was astonished. He looked at the Lord and asked, "Why
did you let him do that?"
The Lord smiled and replied, "Who's he going to tell?"
(Thanks, Carol)
