SPIRITUAL GROWTH RESOURCE OF THE MONTH
"God, Self and Ego: Discerning 'Who's Who' on the Spiritual Journey"
- by Philip St. Romain
What do we mean by the terms God, Self and Ego? The answer depends
on one's view of human nature and its relationship to the divine.
Using the philosophy and theology of St. Thomas Aquinas to qualify
his terms, author Philip St. Romain describes different possible
relationships between God, Self and Ego, and the disciplines to
support these.

The LORD is gracious and merciful,
slow to anger and of great kindness.
The LORD is good to all
and compassionate toward all his works.
Let all your works give you thanks, O LORD,

Let them discourse of the glory of your kingdom

Let them make known your might to the children of Adam,

Your kingdom is a kingdom for all ages,

SAINT OF THE WEEK
- St. Hilary of Arles (400-449)
It's been said that youth is wasted on the young. In some ways,
that was true for today's saint.
Born in France in the early fifth century, Hilary came from an
aristocratic family. In the course of his education he encountered
his relative, Honoratus, who encouraged the young man to join him
in the monastic life. Hilary did so. He continued to follow in the
footsteps of Honoratus as bishop. Hilary was only 29 when he was
chosen bishop of Arles.
The new, youthful bishop undertook the role with confidence. He did
manual labor to earn money for the poor. He sold sacred vessels to
ransom captives. He became a magnificent orator. He traveled
everywhere on foot, always wearing simple clothing.
That was the bright side. Hilary encountered difficulty in his
relationships with other bishops over whom he had some
jurisdiction. He unilaterally deposed one bishop. He selected
another bishop to replace one who was very ill-but, to complicate
matters, did not die! Pope St. Leo the Great kept Hilary a bishop
but stripped him of some of his powers.
Hilary died at 49. He was a man of talent and piety who, in due
time, had learned how to be a bishop.

BOOK OF THE WEEK
"Trappist: Living in the Land of Desire," by Michael Downey
(Michael Mauney, Photographer). Paulist Press, 1997.
-
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0809104911/ref=noism/christianspiritu/
This book describes in words and pictures the quest of the monk to
encounter, know and love Christ in the ordinary and routine
activities of his daily life. Michael Mauney's striking photographs
complement Michael Downey's thoughtful meditations on monastic
life. A must read for anyone seriously interested in the "imitation
of Christ" in the ordinary circumstances and activities of daily
life. A beautiful book!

WEB SITE OF THE WEEK
The Contemplative Spirituality Network
- http://www.contemplativespirituality.org/about.html
The Contemplative Spirituality Network is seeking to explore, and
participate in, the modern recovery of the ancient and essential
Christian contemplative, mystical or wisdom tradition in our time.
This renewal started with Thomas Merton in the 1950's and 1960's
and is now spreading through all Christian denominations like
'treasure hidden in a field' (Matthew 13:44).
The Network is also emerging as a contemporary reflection of our
fundamental interdependence and interconnectedness, as well as
recognising the need to deeply ground our spiritual search in the
heart of this living wisdom tradition.
The Network is offering support, companionship and resources for
the Christian journey of transformation and healing towards
wholeness and unity through (it's various resources)

JOKE OF THE WEEK
- The Florida Minister
A minister in Florida lamented that it was difficult to get his
message across to his local congregation:
"It's so beautiful here in the winter," he said, "that heaven
doesn't interest them that much."
"And it's so hot here in the summer that hell doesn't really scare
them either."

- Fifty Years from Now
Three elderly people were talking about what their grandchildren
would be saying about them fifty years from now.
"I would like my grandchildren to say, 'He was successful in
business,'" declared the first man.
"Fifty years from now," said the second, "I want them to say, 'He
was a loyal family man.'"
Turning to the third one, a lady, he asked, "So what do you want
them to say about you in fifty years?"
"Me?" the third one replied. "I want them to say, 'She certainly
looks good for her age.'"
