SPIRITUAL GROWTH RESOURCE OF THE MONTH
"God, Self and Ego: Discerning 'Who's Who' on the Spiritual Journey"
- by Philip St. Romain
What do we mean by the terms God, Self and Ego? The answer depends
on one's view of human nature and its relationship to the divine.
Using the philosophy and theology of St. Thomas Aquinas to qualify
his terms, author Philip St. Romain describes different possible
relationships between God, Self and Ego, and the disciplines to
support these.

WEEKEND READINGS
http://www.nccbuscc.org/nab/
Saturday: Acts 6:1-7; Ps 33:1-2, 4-5, 18-19; Jn 6:16-21
Sunday: Acts 5:27-32, 40b-41; Ps 30:2, 4, 5-6, 11-12, 13;
Rev 5:11-14; Jn 21:1-19 or 21:1-14
R. (2a) I will praise you, Lord, for you have rescued me.
I will extol you, O LORD, for you drew me clear
and did not let my enemies rejoice over me.
O LORD, you brought me up from the netherworld;
you preserved me from among those going down into the pit.
Sing praise to the LORD, you his faithful ones,
and give thanks to his holy name.
For his anger lasts but a moment;
a lifetime, his good will.
At nightfall, weeping enters in,
but with the dawn, rejoicing.
Hear, O LORD, and have pity on me;
O LORD, be my helper.
You changed my mourning into dancing;
O LORD, my God, forever will I give you thanks.

THEOLOGY NOTE OF THE WEEK
- Free Knowledge
The free act of God's will where, after His free act of creation,
He knows all things that are going to happen and that this
knowledge is contingent upon His free creative will. Therefore, the
free knowledge of God would be different if He had chosen a
different creative fiat. In other words, because God created one
possible existence instead of another, the range of His knowledge
regarding actual existence would have been different had He created
something different in the first place.

SAINT OF THE WEEK
- St. Anselm (1033-1109)
Indifferent toward religion as a young man, Anselm became one of
the Church's greatest theologians and leaders. He received the
title "Father of Scholasticism" for his attempt to analyze and
illumine the truths of faith through the aid of reason.
At 15, Anselm wanted to enter a monastery, but was refused
acceptance because of his father's opposition. Twelve years later,
after careless disinterest in religion and years of worldly living,
he finally fulfilled his desire to be a monk. He entered the
monastery of Bec in Normandy, three years later was elected prior
and 15 years later was unanimously chosen abbot.
Considered an original and independent thinker, Anselm was admired
for his patience, gentleness and teaching skill. Under his
leadership, the abbey of Bec became a monastic school, influential
in philosophical and theological studies.
During these years, at the community's request, Anselm began
publishing his theological works, comparable to those of St.
Augustine. His best-known work is the book Cur Deus Homo ("Why God
Became Man").
At 60, against his will, Anselm was appointed archbishop of
Canterbury in 1093. His appointment was opposed at first by
England's King William Rufus and later accepted. Rufus persistently
refused to cooperate with efforts to reform the Church.
Anselm finally went into voluntary exile until Rufus died in 1100.
He was then recalled to England by Rufus's brother and successor,
Henry I. Disagreeing fearlessly with Henry over the king's
insistence on investing England's bishops, Anselm spent another
three years in exile in Rome.
His care and concern extended to the very poorest people; he
opposed the slave trade. Anselm obtained from the national council
at Westminster the passage of a resolution prohibiting the sale of
human beings.

BOOK OF THE WEEK
"Jesus: Yesterday, Today, Forever," by Bruce Marchiano. Harvest
House Publishers, 1999.
-
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0736900489/ref=noism/christianspiritu/
This is a beautiful picture book of Jesus, the one who flung the
stars in the sky, and kissed the moon into being. It is Jesus told
in simple but elegant language, Jesus who came to birth among his
creatures, among his home town folks, who came to be son to Mary
and foster child of Joseph. The author sees Jesus living life in
earthly time, walking among the living with the throngs of his most
treasured, most valued, most beloved creation: people.
The story begins with the little lady from Nazareth, Mary who has
just had a most spectacular request from God brought to her by an
angel. Soon she realizes that after her Fiat, she has indeed become
pregnant. "How will I tell Joseph? What will Joseph do? Should I
have said my yes to the angel? Did I hear the angel correctly?" All
too soon she is off to visit her elderly cousin Elizabeth who is
also with child. The story turns to Joseph when he finds out about
Mary's pregnancy. He has to tell his parents. They insist that he
divorce the little lady whom he has come to love so very much. "No,
I am not going to divorce her. I am going to marry her because an
angel told her that she bears the Messiah." His parents know he has
lost his wits.
Thus the author tells the story of Jesus of Nazareth in compelling
and interesting words and he inserts very human looking pictures of
the holy family. The author accompanies Jesus through his
childhood, early adulthood, his mission with the apostles, all the
way to Calvary and Easter Sunday. This is a good book for one's
coffee table, a good conversation starter, and a book for
reflection and prayer during the various liturgical seasons of the
year.

JOKE OF THE WEEK
- The Traveling Evangelist
A traveling evangelist always put on a grand finale at his revival
meetings, When he was to preach at a church, he would secretly hire
a small boy to sit in the ceiling rafters with a dove in a cage.
Toward the end of his sermon, the preacher would shout for the Holy
Spirit to come down, and the boy in the rafters would dutifully
release the dove.
At one revival meeting, however, nothing happened when the preacher
called for the Holy Spirit to desend. He again raised his arms and
exclaimed: "Come down, Holy Spirit!"
Still no sign of the dove.
The preacher then heard the anxious voice of a small boy call down
from the rafters:
"Sir, a big black cat just ate the Holy Spirit. Shall I throw down
the cat?"
