Lk 15:1-3, 11-32
Sunday: Ex 17:3-7; Ps 95:1-2, 6-7, 8-9; Rom 5:1-2, 5-8;
Jn 4:5-42
(R) If today you hear God's voice, harden not your hearts.
Come, let us sing joyfully to the LORD;
let us acclaim the Rock of our salvation.
Let us come into his presence with thanksgiving;
let us joyfully sing psalms to him.
Come, let us bow down in worship;
let us kneel before the LORD who made us.
For he is our God,
and we are the people he shepherds, the flock he guides.
Oh, that today you would hear his voice:
"Harden not your hearts as at Meribah,
as in the day of Massah in the desert,
Where your fathers tempted me;
they tested me though they had seen my works."

THEOLOGY NOTE OF THE WEEK
- Filoque
Filioque is the doctrine that the Holy Spirit proceeds equally from
both the Father and the Son.
(Note: this belief is more emphasized in the Orthodox churches than
in Roman Catholic and Protestant churches.)

SAINT OF THE WEEK
- St. Dominic Savio
So many holy persons seem to die young. Among them was Dominic
Savio, the patron of choirboys.
Born into a peasant family at Riva, Italy, young Dominic joined St.
John Bosco as a student at the Oratory in Turin at the age of 12.
He impressed John with his desire to be a priest and to help him in
his work with neglected boys. A peacemaker and an organizer, young
Dominic founded a group he called the Company of the Immaculate
Conception which, besides being devotional, aided John Bosco with
the boys and with manual work. All the members save one, Dominic,
would in 1859 join John in the beginnings of his Salesian
congregation. By that time, Dominic had been called home to heaven.
As a youth, Dominic spent hours rapt in prayer. His raptures he
called "my distractions." Even in play, he said that at times "It
seems heaven is opening just above me. I am afraid I may say or do
something that will make the other boys laugh." Dominic would say,
"I can't do big things. But I want all I do, even the smallest
thing, to be for the greater glory of God."
Dominic's health, always frail, led to lung problems and he was
sent home to recuperate. As was the custom of the day, he was bled
in the thought that this would help, but it only worsened his
condition. He died on March 9, 1857, after receiving the Last
Sacraments. St. John Bosco himself wrote the account of his life.
Some thought that Dominic was too young to be considered a saint.
St. Pius X declared that just the opposite was true, and went ahead
with his cause. Dominic was canonized in 1954.

BOOK OF THE WEEK
"When the Lion Roars: a primer for the unsuspecting mystic," by
Stephen J. Rossetti. Ave Maria Press, 2003.
-
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0877939853/ref=noism/christianspiritu/
This little fast reading guide describes both the delights and the
dangers of the path of mystics. Anyone serious for the way of the
mystic will find in this book valuable and practical insights for
Christian prayer and daily living. He describes a mystic as anyone
who wants to experience the intense and personal desire God has to
share of Himself/Herself with humanity. He says that it is not a
matter of learning some "mystical secret" but of entering into the
divine simplicity of God's unbounded and unrestrained love. This
invitation is given it everyone; not everyone accepts the Divine
invitation.
The author bases his writings solidly on Scripture, the Desert
Fathers, St. Therese of Lisieux, and other mystical writers,
guiding the readers on a path they never expected to take. He
brings to this book his own experience of prayer and his ministry
as a spiritual guide and therapist. He invites the readers to enter
into a deeper understanding of the immense love of God, a love
which is directed to humanity, a sinful and wounded people, wanting
God's healing touch.
"All you who are thirsty, come to the water." IS 55

Spiritual Gifts Inventory
- http://www.kodachrome.org/spiritgift/
Spiritual gifts are supernatural empowerments given by the Holy
Spirit to help build up the human community. Everyone has been
given spiritual gifts, and some of these are given consistently,
implying a calling to a particular ministry. This online inventory
evaluates for 28 different gifts, and will even score your results
online after taking the test (a link to a printable version is also
provided). Even if you've done similar inventories before, it's
good to hear confirmation of your gifts, and to discover areas
where God might be calling you to be more open to receiving gifts.

JOKE OF THE WEEK
- Good news and bad news . . .
An artist asked the gallery owner if there had been any interest in
his paintings on display at that time.
"I have good news and bad news," the owner replied. "The good news
is that a gentleman enquired about your work and wondered if it
would appreciate in value after your death. When I told him it
would, he bought all 15 of your paintings."
"That's wonderful!" the artist exclaimed. "What's the bad news?"
"The guy was your doctor...."
