WEEKEND READINGS
http://www.nccbuscc.org/nab/

Saturday: Jer 11:18-20; Ps. 7:2-3, 9bc-10, 11-12; Jn 7:40-53
Sunday: Is 43:16-21; Ps 126:1-2, 2-3, 4-5, 6; Phil 3:8-14;
Jn 8:1-11

(R) The Lord has done great things for us; we are filled with joy.

When the LORD brought back the captives of Zion,
we were like men dreaming.
Then our mouth was filled with laughter,
and our tongue with rejoicing.

Then they said among the nations,
"The LORD has done great things for them."
The LORD has done great things for us;
we are glad indeed.

Restore our fortunes, O LORD,
like the torrents in the southern desert.
Those that sow in tears
shall reap rejoicing.

Although they go forth weeping,
carrying the seed to be sown,
They shall come back rejoicing,
carrying their sheaves.

THEOLOGY NOTE OF THE WEEK

- Forgiveness

Forgiveness is the act of releasing someone from a debt or
obligation. There are seven words in Scripture that denote the idea
of forgiveness: three in Hebrew and four in Greek. No book of
religion except Christianity teaches that God completely forgives
sins. God remembers our sins no more (Heb. 10:17). God is the
initiator of forgiveness (Col. 2:13).

There is only one sin for which the Father does not promise
forgiveness: blasphemy against the Holy Spirit (Mark 3:28; Matt.
12:32). The contexts suggest this to be the sin of attributing to
unclean spirits the work of the Holy Spirit.

For man to receive forgiveness, repentance is necessary (Luke
17:3-4).

SAINT OF THE WEEK

- Catherine of Genoa

Going to confession one day was the turning point of Catherine's
life.

When Catherine was born, many Italian nobles were supporting
Renaissance artists and writers. The needs of the poor and the sick
were often overshadowed by a hunger for luxury and self-indulgence.

Catherine's parents were members of the nobility in Genoa. At 13
she attempted to become a nun but failed because of her age. At 16
she married Julian, a nobleman who turned out to be selfish and
unfaithful. For a while she tried to numb her disappointment by a
life of selfish pleasure.

One day in confession she had a new sense of her own sins and how
much God loved her. She reformed her life and gave good example to
Julian, who soon turned from his self-centered life of distraction.

Julian's spending, however, had ruined them financially. He and
Catherine decided to live in the Pammatone, a large hospital in
Genoa, and to dedicate themselves to works of charity there. After
Julian's death in 1497, Catherine took over management of the
hospital.

She wrote about purgatory which, she said, begins on earth for
souls open to God. Life with God in heaven is a continuation and
perfection of the life with God begun on earth.

Exhausted by her life of self-sacrifice, she died September 15,
1510, and was canonized in 1737.

BOOK OF THE WEEK

"Ninety Minutes in Heaven," by Don Piper. Revell, 2004.
-
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/1576603466/ref=noism/christianspiritu/

With the help of Cecil Murphey, Don relates the details of his
experience of being in a terrible car accident, dying, being in
heaven for 90 minutes, coming back to life, suffering for months of
excruciating pain in recovery, all the while wondering why God had
brought him back to earth, and finally realizing that by telling
his story he could bring hope to many others.

AS Don was driving home from a conference, his car was crushed by a
semi that crossed into his lane. Medical personnel said he died
instantly. But while his body lay lifeless in the ruins of his car,
Don relates how he experienced the glories of heaven. He was simply
astonished by the beauty all around him and by the heavenly music
in which he joined. His disappointment was great when he had to
come back to life and await the long healing process that was
necessary.

JOKE OF THE WEEK

Sally was driving home from one of her business trips in Northern
Arizona when she saw an elderly Navajo woman walking on the side of
the road. As the trip was a long and quiet one, she stopped the car
and asked the Navajo woman if she would like a ride. With a silent
nod of thanks, the woman got into the car.

Resuming the journey, Sally tried in vain to make a bit of small
talk with the Navajo woman. The old woman just sat silently,
looking intently at everything she saw, studying every little
detail, until she noticed a brown bag on the seat next to Sally.

'What in bag?' asked the old woman. Sally looked down at the brown
bag and said, 'It's a bottle of wine. I got it for my husband.'

The Navajo woman was silent for another moment or two. Then
speaking with the quiet wisdom of an elder, she said, 'Good trade.'
