SPIRITUAL GROWTH RESOURCE OF THE MONTH
The Spiritual Road To Serenity
retreat conferences by Philip St. Romain, M.S., D. Min.
- http://shalomplace.com/inetmin/road/index.html
This retreat was presented for Contemplative Outreach of St. Louis
in 1994 and was professionally recorded by Liguori Publications,
Inc.
Now, with Internet technology and RealPlayer, you, too, can listen
to the retreat conferences and discussions between Dr. St. Romain
and participants as he explains the following pathways to a deeper
spiritual life:
* Give up on worldly peace (addictions, attachments, etc.)
* Be open to your own growth
* Love God above all
* Be reconciled in your relationships
* Learn to meet your needs
The five retreat conferences are each divided into short segments
(about 20 minutes each) to facilitate prayerful listening and
reflection. All retreat handouts are provided.

WEEKEND READINGS
http://www.nccbuscc.org/nab/
Saturday: Is 58:9b-14; Ps. 86:1-2, 3-4, 5-6; Lk 5:27-32
Sunday: Dt 26:4-10; Ps 91:1-2, 10-15; Rom 10:8-13; Lk
4:1-13
(R) Be with me, Lord, when I am in trouble.
You who dwell in the shelter of the Most High,
who abide in the shadow of the Almighty,
say to the LORD, "My refuge and fortress,
my God in whom I trust."
No evil shall befall you,
nor shall affliction come near your tent,
For to his angels he has given command about you,
that they guard you in all your ways.
Upon their hands they shall bear you up,
lest you dash your foot against a stone.
You shall tread upon the asp and the viper;
you shall trample down the lion and the dragon.
Because he clings to me, I will deliver him;
I will set him on high because he acknowledges my name.
He shall call upon me, and I will answer him;
I will be with him in distress;
I will deliver him and glorify him.

THEOLOGY NOTE OF THE WEEK
- Fatalism
Fatalism is the idea that all things are predetermined to occur and
that there is no ability of the person to alter the predetermined
plan of God in any event. This is not the correct biblical view.
The Bible teaches us that we can influence God with our prayers
(James 5:16). How this influence is worked out by God who knows all
things from eternity is something apparently unexplainable in
Christianity.

SAINT OF THE WEEK
- St. Polycarp
Polycarp, bishop of Smyrna (modern Izmir, Turkey), disciple of St.
John the Apostle and friend of St. Ignatius of Antioch was a
revered Christian leader during the first half of the second
century. St. Ignatius, on his way to Rome to be martyred, visited
Polycarp at Smyrna, and later at Troas wrote him a personal letter.
The Asia Minor Churches recognized Polycarp's leadership by
choosing him as a representative to discuss with Pope Anicetus the
date of the Easter celebration in Rome--a major controversy in the
early Church.
Only one of the many letters written by Polycarp has been
preserved, the one he wrote to the Church of Philippi in Macedonia.
At 86, Polycarp was led into the crowded Smyrna stadium to be
burned alive. The flames did not harm him and he was finally killed
by a dagger. The centurion ordered the saint's body burned. The
"Acts" of Polycarp's martyrdom are the earliest preserved, fully
reliable account of a Christian martyr's death. He died in 156.

BOOK OF THE WEEK
"Waking Up to This Day: Seeing the Beauty Right Before Us," by
Paula D'Arcy. Orbis, 2009.
-
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/1570758492/ref=noism/christianspiritu/
Once again Paula D'Arcy presents a very readable book urging her
readers to be awake and aware of God's hand in good times and in
bad. She tries to shatter our limited vision and show us God's
love as unconditional.
D'Arcy lives always in the shadow of the pain she experienced when
her husband and 2-month old child were killed in a car accident.
She was pregnant with a second daughter, Beth Stare, at the time.
Through darkness that nearly destroyed her, the author moved with
the help of God and her friends to an inner peace which prompted
her to make her mission one of reaching out to those in similar
pain and sorrow.
This book tells the story of her recovery and her becoming a
writer, retreat leader, and conference and seminar speaker in the
United States, Canada, and abroad. In this book, D'Arcy supports
the growth and development of those in need, those in prison, and
those living in the third world or disadvantaged cultures.
D'Arcy offers hope and courage in her book, invites others to make
peace with change, and to live with hearts open to love, even amid
the detours of life.
