and participants as he explains the following pathways to a deeper
spiritual life:
* Give up on worldly peace (addictions, attachments, etc.)
* Be open to your own growth
* Love God above all
* Be reconciled in your relationships
* Learn to meet your needs
The five retreat conferences are each divided into short segments
(about 20 minutes each) to facilitate prayerful listening and
reflection. All retreat handouts are provided.

WEEKEND READINGS
http://www.nccbuscc.org/nab/
Saturday: 1 Kgs 3:4-13; Ps. 119: 9-14; Mk 6:30-34
Sunday: Is 6:1-2a, 3-8; Ps 138:1-2, 2-3, 4-5, 7-8; 1 Cor
15:1-11; Lk 5:1-11
(R) In the sight of the angels I will sing your praises, Lord.
I will give thanks to you, O LORD, with all my heart,
for you have heard the words of my mouth;
in the presence of the angels I will sing your praise;
I will worship at your holy temple
and give thanks to your name.
Because of your kindness and your truth;
for you have made great above all things
your name and your promise.
When I called, you answered me;
you built up strength within me.
All the kings of the earth shall give thanks to you, O LORD,
when they hear the words of your mouth;
and they shall sing of the ways of the LORD:
"Great is the glory of the LORD."
Your right hand saves me.
The LORD will complete what he has done for me;
your kindness, O LORD, endures forever;
forsake not the work of your hands.

THEOLOGY NOTE OF THE WEEK
- Falsifiability
Falsifiability is the ability of something to be proven false. A
non falsifiable statement would be, "There is a green lizard
sitting in a rocking chair on the fourth largest moon of Jupiter."
This statement is not falsifiable in that it cannot be proven false
because it cannot be verified or denied. Jesus' resurrection was
falsifiable in that all the critics had to do was produce the body,
but they did not. Falsifiability, generally, is a test of the
validity of a belief or occurrence. Something that is not
falsifiable can be said to be untrue since it cannot be confirmed
or denied.

SAINT OF THE WEEK
- St. Jerome Emiliani
A careless and irreligious soldier for the city-state of Venice,
Jerome was captured in a skirmish at an outpost town and chained in
a dungeon. In prison Jerome had a lot of time to think, and he
gradually learned how to pray. When he escaped, he returned to
Venice where he took charge of the education of his nephews--and
began his own studies for the priesthood.
In the years after his ordination, events again called Jerome to a
decision and a new lifestyle. Plague and famine swept northern
Italy. Jerome began caring for the sick and feeding the hungry at
his own expense. While serving the sick and the poor, he soon
resolved to devote himself and his property solely to others,
particularly to abandoned children. He founded three orphanages, a
shelter for penitent prostitutes and a hospital.
Around 1532 Jerome and two other priests established a
congregation, the Clerks Regular of Somasca, dedicated to the care
of orphans and the education of youth. Jerome died in 1537 from a
disease he caught while tending the sick. He was canonized in 1767.
In 1928 Pius Xl named him the patron of orphans and abandoned
children.

BOOK OF THE WEEK
"The Collected Works of St. John of the Cross," translated by
Kieran Kavanaugh. ICS Publications, 1991.
-
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0935216146/ref=noism/christianspiritu/
This is the collected works by John of the Cross, a Christian
mystic known for his deep relationship with God: Father, Son, and
Holy Spirit. Both he and Teresa Avila are the chief mystics in the
Western Christian tradition. Included in this collection are most
of his works. These include his poetry, "Dark Night of the Soul,"
"Ascent of Mount Carmel," "Spiritual Canticle," "Living the Flame
of Love," and "Sayings of Light and Love." Also some other random
material is included. The works are rendered in beautiful English
from the original Spanish (in the poetry section the original
Spanish is listed too). John is the official patron of poetry for
Spain, and if you read his works, you'll know why.

JOKE OF THE WEEK
- Kids and Grandparents
A little girl was diligently pounding away on her grandfather's
word processor. She told him she was writing a story. "What's it
about?" he asked. "I don't know," she replied. "I can't read."
- - -
My grandson was visiting one day when he asked, "Grandma,do you
know how you and God are alike?" I mentally polished my halo and I
said, "No, how are we alike?'' "You're both old," he replied.
- - -
My young grandson called the other day to wish me Happy Birthday.
He asked me how old I was, and I told him, 62. My grandson was
quiet for a moment, and then he asked, "Did you start at 1?"
- - -
A second grader came home from school and said to her grandmother,
"Grandma, guess what? We learned how to make babies today." The
grandmother, more than a little surprised, tried to keep her cool.
"That's interesting," she said, "how do you make babies?" "It's
simple," replied the girl. "You just change 'y' to 'i' and add
'es'."
(Whew! Thanks, Carol.)
