and Holy One of Israel.
God indeed is my savior;
I am confident and unafraid.
My strength and my courage is the LORD,
and he has been my savior.
With joy you will draw water
at the fountain of salvation.
Give thanks to the LORD, acclaim his name;
among the nations make known his deeds,
proclaim how exalted is his name.
Sing praise to the LORD for his glorious achievement;
let this be known throughout all the earth.
Shout with exultation, O city of Zion,
for great in your midst
is the Holy One of Israel!

THEOLOGY NOTE OF THE WEEK
- Exigesis
Exegesis is when a person interprets a text based solely on what it
says. That is, he extracts out of the text what is there as opposed
to reading into it what is not there (Compare with Eisegesis).
There are rules to proper exegesis: read the immediate context,
related themes, word definitions, etc., that all play a part in
properly understanding what something says and does not say.

SAINT OF THE WEEK
- December 13th St. Lucy.
A famous early martyr of Sicily, put to death at Syracuse in the
great persecution of the Emperor Diocletian in the year 304. Her
name is in the Roman Canon of the Mass. Traditionally she was a
girl who refused offers of marriage, gave away her wealth to the
poor and was then persecuted by her suitor. The judge ordered that
her eyes should be torn out (hence two eyes are her emblem) and she
was put to death with the sword. Her shrine is in the church which
bears her name in Venice. In Sweden, St. Lucy's day, being
virtually at the winter solstice, has been turned into a festival
of light whose popularity has spread elsewhere.

BOOK OF THE WEEK
"A History of the Virgin Mary," by Miri Rubin. Yale University
Press.
-
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0300105002/ref=noism/christianspiritu/
In her 500 some pages, Rubin unearths the diversity of meanings of
different ethnic, national, and religious groups found in this
Jewish mother. The author's special interest shows how this poor
little known woman became a global icon. Readers will discover that
Rubin is both scholar and writer.
This book is rich and readable, has clear explanations, poems and
prayers, and contains illustrations of many lesser-known images of
the lady from Nazareth. The book is divided into six sections,
beginning with the events of the Mary of the Gospels to the 5th
century when she was declared Mother of God in the West at the
Council of Ephesus in 431. Rubin writes of the contested elements
of devotion when the Eastern Church held her in greater reverence
than the Latin-speaking Roman Church.
Through different eras Mary is featured in various garbs, from
imperial to the dress of the common folk. She is seen as a
protective mother, as healing goddess, as a poor woman, and the
Queen of Heaven and earth. Luke sees Mary as true daughter of
Abraham. In the second century Mary was seen by Jews as adulteress.
Rubin shows devotion to Mary as the devotion rose and fell and rose
again for this woman who seemed to link heaven to earth.

WEB SITE OF THE WEEK
The Great O Antiphons
- http://www.fisheaters.com/customsadvent10.html
The seven "O Antiphons" (also called the "Greater Antiphons" or
"Major Antiphons") are prayers that come from the Breviary's
Vespers during the Octave before Christmas Eve, a time which is
called the "Golden Nights."
Each Antiphon begins with "O" and addresses Jesus with a unique
title which comes from the prophecies of Isaias and Micheas
(Micah), and whose initials, when read backwards, form an acrostic
for the Latin "Ero Cras" which means "Tomorrow I come." Those
titles for Christ are:
Sapientia
Adonai
Radix Jesse
Clavis David
Oriens
Rex Gentium
Emmanuel
(from the website, which has more discussion of each of these
titles and even the Gregorian chants)

JOKE OF THE WEEK
A gentleman entered a busy florist shop that displayed a large sign
that read "Say It With Flowers."
"Wrap up one rose," he told the florist.
"Only one?" the florist asked.
"Just one," the customer replied. "I'm a man of few words."
(Hey guys, I wouldn't try it!)
- - - while we're doing sophistries . . .
I stopped at a fast-food restaurant recently. I was fascinated by a
sign which offered Fat-Free French Fries. I decided to give them a
try.
I was dismayed when the clerk pulled a basket of fries from the
fryer, which was dripping with fat. He filled a bag with these
fries and put them in my order.
"Just a minute!" I said. "Those aren't fat-free."
"Yes, they are. We only charge for the potatoes . . . the fat is
free!"
