WEEKEND READINGS

21:34-36

3:12-4:2; Lk 21:25-28, 34-36
R. (1b) To you, O Lord, I lift my soul.
Your ways, O LORD, make known to me;
teach me your paths,
Guide me in your truth and teach me,
for you are God my savior,
and for you I wait all the day.
Good and upright is the LORD;
thus he shows sinners the way.
He guides the humble to justice,
and teaches the humble his way.
All the paths of the LORD are kindness and constancy
toward those who keep his covenant and his decrees.
The friendship of the LORD is with those who fear him,
and his covenant, for their instruction.

THEOLOGY NOTE OF THE WEEK
- Eucharist
The Eucharist are the elements of the communion supper in Christian
Churches where the bread and wine are consumed as a representation
of the sacrifice of Christ. They correspond, representatively, to
the body and blood of Christ.

SAINT OF THE WEEK
- December 3rd. St. Francis Xavier.
A native of the Basque country, born in the castle of Xavier (or
Javier) in Navarre, he met Ignatius of Loyola in Paris and was one
of the original group who took vows in 1534 to form the beginnings
of the Jesuits. In 1541 he sailed to Goa on the West coast of
India, for many centuries a Portuguese colony, to evangelise the
Indies. His journeys took him to Malaya and Ceylon; everywhere he
lived a life of extreme simplicity and made many converts from
low-caste natives, In 1549 he reached Japan and wanted to meet the
Mikado, but tradition required that he offered a present which he
could not possibly afford, so the meeting never took place until,
with the support of his Order, he was able to come dressed in
finery and with suitable gifts. He sowed the seeds of Japanese
Christianity which in the 17th. century were to grow and resist
savage persecution. He longed to visit China, but fell ill and died
in 1552 on the island of Chang-Shuen-Shan off the Chinese mainland.
His shrine is in Goa, though some of his re1ics are in the Gesu in
Rome. He was declared Patron Saint of the Foreign missions in 1927.

BOOK OF THE WEEK
"Watch for the Light: Readings for Advent and Christmas," Orbis,
2004.
-
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/1570755418/ref=noism/christianspiritu/
This eclectic collection of longer-than-usual daily readings for
Advent through the Feast of the Epiphany succeeds in helping its
readers more deeply appreciate the Christmas season.
The selections are recent and ancient, ecumenical and even secular,
with excerpts from Bernard of Clairvaux, Martin Luther, T.S. Eliot,
Thomas Merton, and Anne Dillard, to name a few. In various essays,
for example, Dietrich Bonhoeffer explores the existential meaning
of Advent, Kathleen Norris contemplates what the Annunciation
reveals about spiritual virginity, and John Howard Yoder considers
the Incarnation as a kind of revolution.
Don't expect a string of Hallmark sentiments, however. The overall
tone of the book is rather hard-edged, emphasizing the poverty,
paradoxes, and perplexities of the Nativity. Like a clear winter
night, it's spiritually bracing stuff, biting and full of mystery.
