MESSAGE OF THE DAY

The Pilgrims made seven times more graves than huts. No Americans
have been more impoverished than these who, nevertheless, set aside
a day of thanksgiving.
~H.U. Westermayer

Thou hast given so much to me,
Give one thing more, - a grateful heart;
Not thankful when it pleaseth me,
As if Thy blessings had spare days,
But such a heart whose pulse may be Thy praise.
~ George Herbert

GOSPEL MEDITATION
from "Praying the Daily Gospels," by Philip St. Romain:

- Luke 21: 20-28 (The Second Coming)

The Church has always believed that her risen Lord would return.
Just how, when, and where this will occur we do not know, despite
the insistence of Fundamentalist exegetes to the contrary. Jesus'
teachings concerning his return come to us couched in the words of
apocalyptic literature, which is highly symbolic and difficult to
understand. It is enough for us to believe that history will not
terminate in some catastrophic dead end; Christ shall one day be
"all in all."

- What does the Second Coming mean to you?

- Do you believe you will be faced with the prospect of living
through personal and/or national catastrophe before you die? If so,
how do you propose to remain hopeful when those times come?

NOTES FROM A CLASSICAL WORK
- "Imitation of Christ," by Thomas A. Kempis

The Disciple

Nothing happens in the world without Your design and providence,
and
without cause. It is well for me, O Lord, that You have humbled
me,
that I may learn the justice of Your judgments and cast away all
presumption and haughtiness of heart. It is profitable for me
that
shame has covered my face that I may look to You rather than to
men
for consolation. Hereby I have learned also to fear Your
inscrutable
judgment falling alike upon the just and unjust yet not without
equity
and justice.
