SAINT OF THE WEEK
- November 23rd. St. Columbanus.
Born in Ireland in 543, he was a monk of Bangor in County Down
until in 590 with 12 others he set out on a mission to France; this
took him to the Vosges mountains of Eastern France, where at
Luxeuil he established a centre of the 'Irish monastic tradition
abroad' - not without causing friction with the local Frankish
Christian tradition. Eventually the order was given for his
deportation back to Ireland; the journey was prevented by a storm
at sea, and Columbanus was able to head in other directions, first
to the Rhine valley, and then over the Alps to Bobbio in Italy
where a large new foundation was made in 613. Some of his poems,
and his monastic Rule, have survived. His Rule was too strict for
most, who preferred the greater flexibility offered by St.
Benedict. Although the form of monasticism which he introduced did
not survive, Columbanus may be reckoned the greatest of the Irish
missionaries to the mainland of Europe. He died in 615.

BOOK OF THE WEEK
"The Eucharist and Social Justice," by Sister Margaret Scott.
Paulist Press, 2009.
-
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0809145669/ref=noism/christianspiritu/
Margaret Scott is a member of the Handmaids of the Sacred Heart of
Jesus and writes from her experiences in many foreign countries,
especially third world countries where poverty and hunger are all
too common. As she shared the lives of the poor, she developed an
insight into the international community and linked her studies
with the Eucharist, where no one goes hungry. Social justice is a
much needed goal, and Sister Margaret deplores the suffering that
all too many people endure day by day. She links her way of working
for social justice with the celebration of the Eucharistic
sacrifice.
From the beginning, the Eucharist is revealed as a sacrament of
protest and resistance that requires us to stand with the
oppressed. It is a vigorous critique of the exclusion techniques of
economic globalization. The Penitential Rite forges am unbreakable
link between forgiveness and justice in the quest for peace. It
acknowledges wrongdoing and social sins of oppression. The Liturgy
of the Word underlines the connection between Scripture and the
social injustices of the times. We are seated at the table with
all who suffer. The Presentation of the gifts offers a foundation
for social action and the care of the planet. The Eucharistic
prayer is a narrative in which the poor are both the priority and
reference point. We are in awe at the wonderful deeds of the Lord.
The words of Consecration transform us. This is my Body! These
words call us to see Christ in every one. Do this in memory of
me...here we are called to reproduce the mission of Jesus Christ, who
identified himself with the poor, the weak, the marginalized.
¨Yes, the Eucharist is meant to reach the membership of the whole
world. Yes, it does have something to say about the impact that
economic globalization has on the poor. Yes, the Eucharist does
provide a theological basis for social justice. Yes, our
eucharistic celebrations can overflow with a passion for justice
and the poor. Lets do it. We can make it happen."

WEB SITE OF THE WEEK
On Christian Eschatalogy
- http://www.bookrags.com/wiki/Christian_eschatology
The movie, 2012, comes at a time in the Church year when we call to
mind the "last things" and the "things yet to come." Such is the
concern of the branch of theology we call "eschatology" and this
website provides a comprehensive discussion of the issue. As you
will see, it's complicated. Nevertheless, we do proclaim that
"Christ has died, Christ has risen, and Christ will come again."
So may it be.

JOKE OF THE WEEK
- The Bathtub Test ...
During a visit to the mental asylum, a visitor asked the
Director how do you determine whether or not a patient should be
institutionalized.
"Well," said the Director, "we fill up a bathtub, then we offer
a teaspoon, a teacup and a bucket to the patient and ask him or her
to empty the bathtub."
"Oh, I understand," said the visitor. "A normal person would
use the bucket because it's bigger than the spoon or the teacup."
"No." said the Director, "A normal person would pull the plug.
Do you want a bed near the window?
(Thanks, Carol)
