R. (22)Lord, let your mercy be on us, as we place our trust in you.
Upright is the word of the LORD,
and all his works are trustworthy.
He loves justice and right;
of the kindness of the LORD the earth is full.
See, the eyes of the LORD are upon those who fear him,
upon those who hope for his kindness,
To deliver them from death
and preserve them in spite of famine.
Our soul waits for the LORD,
who is our help and our shield.
May your kindness, O LORD, be upon us
who have put our hope in you.

THEOLOGY NOTE OF THE WEEK
- Eisegesis
Eisegesis is when a person interprets and reads information into
the text that is not there. An example would be in viewing 1 Cor.
8:5 which says, "For though there be that are called gods, whether
in heaven or in earth, (as there be gods many, and lords many,"
(KJV). With this verse, Mormons, for example, bring their
preconceived idea of the existence of many gods to this text and
assert that it says there are many gods. But that is not what it
says. It says that there are many that are called gods. Being
called a god doesn't make it a god. Therefore, the text does not
teach what the Mormons say and they are guilty of eisegesis; that
is, reading into the text what it does not say.

SAINT OF THE WEEK
- October 19th. St. Paul of the Cross.
Paul Danei, the founder of the Passionists, was born in 1694 at
Ovada, inland from Genoa. He briefly joined the Venetian army in
1714 but then spent several years in prayerful contemplation before
setting out with his brother John to found the new congregation to
be known as the Passionists. Beginning in 1727 with a site at
Monte Argentário, a promontory on the west coast of Italy near
Grosseto linked to the mainland by a causeway, two other houses
were added by 1747, and definitive approval from the Pope was given
in 1769. The principle of deep devotion to the Passion of Christ,
which fuelled the congregation's members, was to be transmitted to
parishes by missions and retreats. The Passionists, their habit
emblazoned with a distinctive heart-shaped symbol 'PASSIO IESU
XTI', were soon notable for work among the sick and dying, and for
reconciling sinners and lapsed, though many novices left, finding
life in the houses too severe. St. Paul, who was a notable
preacher and writer, was especially interested in the mission to
England, and encouraged various members of the congregation in
their work there, notably Blessed Dominic Barberi, who received
Cardinal Newman into the Church in 1845. St. Paul of the Cross
died in 1775 and is buried in the basilica of SS. John and Paul on
the Caelian Hill in Rome, a church handed over to the Passionists
by Pope Clement XIV in 1765.

BOOK OF THE WEEK
"Attitude 101: What every leader needs to know," by John Maxwell.
Thomas Nelson Publishers, 2003.
-
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0785263500/ref=noism/christianspiritu/
This little pocket-size book contains a wealth of material for
those called to leadership positions. Maxwell tells his readers
that good attitudes do not make a good team, but bad attitudes
guarantee its ruin. Bad attitudes for the one in leadership is sure
to lead to frustration. He urges readers to recognize how attitudes
impact performance. He had pinpoints feelings, behaviors, and
thinking habits that lead to no good. He offers ways to change bad
attitudes, and creates new definitions of failure and success that
will improve performance.
Maxwell gives seven axioms about attitude that help one understand
how it impacts one's life, for example, "Our attitude at the
beginning of a task will affect its outcome more than anything
else." "Our attitude can turn our problems into blessings."
He lists elements that shape a person's attitudes, for example,
"inherent personality, environment, adult acceptance, self-image,
exposure to new experiences, physical appearance, marriage, family,
job, success, adjustments." He offers eight ways to change
attitudes. He even shows seven ways that adversity can enhance
attitudes. At no time does Maxwell hint that sacrifice is not a
necessary ingredient for success. In attaining good attitudes.

WEB SITE OF THE WEEK
Christianity and What is Good Forever
- http://www.christianityetc.org/
Here we have a very straightforward presentation of basic Christian
beliefs and practices. I found it difficult to characterize it in
terms of denominational affiliation, though the tendency is toward
an ecumenically-sensitive evangelical position. This would be a
good site to refer to people who just want to know more about the
basic, core teachings and practices of Christianity.

JOKE OF THE WEEK
- The Power Memory Class graduates
An elderly couple suffering from deteriorating memory signed up for
a power memory class to improve their memories. The power memory
method taught them to remember things by associating these with
familiar objects. After completing the 5-day course, the old man
was discussing the merits of the course with a neighbor in his
backyard.
The old man claimed, "Signing up for that power memory class was
one of the best things I've ever done."
The neighbor asked, "So who was your instructor?"
"Well, lemme see," said the old man. "What do you, ahhh, call that
flower that smells nice but, ummm, has those thorns..."
"A rose?" volunteered the neighbor.
"Yeah, right!" nodded the old man who then turned towards his house
and yelled, "Hey, Rose, what was the name of the instructor in our
power memory class?"
